Volcanic Action

OBJECTIVES

1. Definition of a volcano.
2.Explain the states of a volcano.
3.compare and contrast the positive and negative effects of a volcano.
4. Identify images of types of volcanoes.
5.illustrate by drawing the different parts of a volcano
6 .Geographically locating three notable volcanoes.
What is a volcano?
- A volcano is a
vent or ‘chimney’
that takes molten
rock (magma) from
within the Earth’s
crust to the Earth’s
surface.
States of a volcano
- Dormant
- Active
- Extinct
Dormant
A dormant volcano
is one which has not
erupted in a long
time but there is a
possibility it can
erupt in the future.
Active
- An active volcano is
a volcano which is
either erupting or is
likely to erupt in the
future.
Extinct
- Extinct volcanoes are
those that scientists
consider unlikely to erupt
again, because the volcano
no longer has a magma
supply.
DID YOU KNOW
The island of Bermuda sits atop a long extinct volcano located 1,000 kilometers
(6000)MILES east .

The unique formation of this volcano have left scientist sparkled of its formation.
Places where active volcanoes can be
found.
St. kitts
Monserrat
St Vincent
Hawaii
what is a safe distance away from a
volcano
The danger area of a volcano covers approximately a 20 miles radius.
Warning signs of volcanic eruption
Increase in earthquakes
Swelling in the ground
Change in heat flow
Land slides
Drying of springs
SAFETY RULES FOR VOLCANIC
ERUPTION
Stay inside with windows and doors close.

Wear long sleeves and long pants.

Use goggles to protect eyes.

Wear a mask, exposed ash can harm you

health particular the respiratory tract.
Positive effects of Volcanos
- Ash ejected by the volcano acts as
a good fertilizer for soils.

- Volcanoes attract many tourists,

who enjoy the dramatic scenery that
they produce.

- Rising magma brings valuable

minerals to the surface, creating
mining opportunities.
Negative effects of volcanos
1.VOLCANO SPEW HOT DANGEROUS
GASSES SUCH AS ASH AND LAVA.
2. PEOPLE HAVE DIED FROM
VOLCANIC BLAST.
3.VOLCANIC ERUPTION CAN AFFECT
THE HEALTH, EXAMPLE
RESPIROTORY PROBLEMS.
4.VOLCANIC ERUPTION CAN CAUSE
FLOODS, MUDSLIDS,
CONTIMINATION OF DRINKING
WATER.
Parts of a Volcano
Parts of a volcano
1. Eruption Clouds
2. Vent
3. Lava
4. Layers of Ash
5. Magma
6. Magma Chamber
Eruption Clouds
A cloud of gases that
forms downwind of an
erupting volcano
Magma
Magma
is extremely hot
liquid and semi-
liquid rock located
under Earth's
surface.
Lava
Magma that has been
erupted.
Vent
The place at the Earth's
surface where lava flows
Layers of Ash
Volcanic ash is a mixture of
rock, mineral, and glass particles
expelled from a volcano during a
volcanic eruption.
Magma Chamber
The location beneath the vent of a
volcano where molten rock
(magma) is stored prior to
eruption
