Science Trivia
The 1814 eruption of Mayon was also one of
its deadliest: Ballistic projectiles from
Mayon were sent hurtling toward the
unsuspecting town of Cagsawa, killing
1,200 locals. Those who survived escaped
and resettled in the town of Daraga.

Specific Objectives:
• Define and describe a volcano;
• Identify the different parts of a
volcano
• Determine how volcanoes are
formed;
Song Analysis!

Direction: Listen to the song carefully.

Based on the song, give five
descriptions of a volcano. Present
your answer in a concept map.
Volcanism
is the phenomenon of eruption of molten
rock onto the surface of the Earth or a
solid-surface planet or moon, where lava,
pyroclastics and volcanic gases erupt
through a break in the surface called a
vent.
What is a volcano?

• Volcano: an opening in
Earth’s crust through
which molten rock, rock
fragments, and hot gases
erupt.
refers to mountain or hill,
typically conical, having a crater

or vent in which lava, rock

fragments, hot vapor, and gas
are or have been erupted
from the earth's crust.
VIDEO ANALYSIS
• Watch the video about the formation of
volcanoes. Take note of the processes in
your notebook.
Where do volcanoes occur?
Most form along plate boundaries ….
1. in subduction zones (one plate sinks
under another)
2. over hot spots
3. where plates are pulling apart
Vent - An opening of the Earth
through which volcanic
materials can escape.

Main Vent is the main opening or outlet on

the surface of a volcano that
emits lava, gases, ash or other volcanic
materials.
Side Vent is a smaller outlet through which
magma escapes.
Summit is the highest point or
the apex of the volcano. At the
summit,
you have an opening called
vent.
Slopes-are the sides or flanks
of a volcano that radiate from
the main or
central vent.
Base is lower outer part of the
volcano.
Ash Cloud - A cloud of ash formed
by volcanic explosions. large
clouds of gas and dust ejected from
a volcano. sh and Gas Cloud is a of
mixtures of rock, minerals, glass
particles and gases expelled or
pushed out of the volcano during
volcanic eruption.
Crater - The mouth of a
volcano, which surrounds the
vent. an opening to the magma
chamber below.

Conduit - An underground
passage which magma travels
through.
Magma chamber - A large
underground pool of liquid rock
found beneath the surface of
the Earth.

Lava – Liquid rock that flows out

from a volcano. formed when
gas bubbles in molten rocks
called magma force out the
ground around them.
Magma – Liquid rock inside a
volcano. It can be runny or
viscous (thick). Magma rises
because of the pressure
difference between the magma
and rocks around it: as more
bubbles form in the magma, the
pressure gets even higher.
•What is the importance of
knowing the parts of a
volcano?
•Why do we need to know
how they are formed?
As populations increase, areas near
volcanoes are being developed and aviation
routes are increasing. As a result, more
people and property are at risk from volcanic
activity. Volcanic eruptions are one of Earth's
most dramatic and violent agents of change.

dramatic and violent agents of change. ...
The warning time preceding volcanic events
typically allows sufficient time for affected
communities to implement response plans
and mitigation measures. Comprehensive
monitoring provides timely warnings of
volcano reawakening.
Difference of a mountain from a
volcano.
Mountains and Volcanoes are somewhat
similar but the major factor that makes them
different is their formation. A mountain is
formed due to various geological processes
like movement and opposition of
tectonic plates but a volcano is formed
around a vent that allows magma to reach
the surface of the earth. It all has to do with
plate tectonics.
Volca-Know!
Directions: Arrange the statements about the
formation of volcanoes in their correct
sequence.
Write numbers 1-5 on a ¼ sheet of paper.
1. In the mantle, the plate is gradually heated
2. When the pressure becomes high enough
in the magma chamber, magma forces its way to
the crust and blows its top creating an opening.
3. The molten rocks (magma) collect in the
magma chamber.
4. The movement of the earth’s crust
sometimes cause a plate to slide down the
mantle.
5. This action releases steam that melts the
rock on top of it.
II.Directions:
Identify what is being described in each
statement below.

1.It is the main opening at the peak of the volcano.

2.Molten rock expelled from a volcano during
volcanic eruption.
3.It is the rupture in the crust that allows hot lava to
escape from a magma chamber below the
Earth’s surface.
4.It is consists of fragments of rocks, minerals and
volcanic glass created during volcanic eruptions.
