Survival

Organisms need to have special features which help

them to survive in their habitat.

These special features are called ADAPTATIONS.

For example: You have plenty of adaptations to survive

in your habitat. Your fingers are an excellent
adaptation.
Without their ability to grip you would not be able to do
all of that schoolwork!

Can you think of other adaptations that you have?

Feeding Types - Reminder
We can group animals together in many ways.

One way that we can group them together is in

the way that they feed.
Organisms may be producers.
Producers make their own food.
Plants do this by using the sun.
Some types of bacteria can also
make their own food by using light or
chemical reactions.

Consumers cannot make their own food.

They must consume other organisms.
Producer or consumer?
Consumers
Consumers can be grouped into different types:

Herbivores
These consumers eat producers
or plants and bacteria.

Carnivores
These consumers eat other consumers
or we might say they eat animals.

Omnivores
These consumers eat both other consumers
and producers. So we might say they eat
animals and plants. A bit like us!
Changes in food chains and webs

Because the animals in a food chain are so dependent on

each other, changes in the numbers of organisms in one part
of the food chain can have dramatic effects.

Look at the food chain below:

grass  rabbit  fox

What would happen to the numbers of rabbits and foxes if

the all of the grass was to die out?

Rabbit numbers would decrease because they would have

less to eat and may starve or stop reproducing. Fox numbers
would also fall as there would not be as many rabbits to eat.
Look at the food chain below:

Plankton  shrimp  tuna  dolphin

It has been a very bad year for plankton. Due to the lack of food their
numbers have dropped dramatically. Drag the sliders on the
indicators below to show how this will affect the numbers of the
other members of the food chain.

Dolphins are often killed by being caught in the driftnets of fisherman.

More dolphins than ever have been killed this year. This means that
the numbers of dolphins is very low. Drag the sliders on the
indicators below to show how this will affect the numbers of the
other members of the food chain.

Large numbers of shrimp larvae did not develop properly. Because

of this shrimp numbers have declined. Drag the sliders on the
