To get indexed, a journal has to submit a formal

application to the database and provide relevant

Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the student should
be able to:
• identify scientific literature;
• demonstrate awareness in selecting the
right journal articles
• justify research ideas through scientific
theories
• compose a well-founded scientific literature
for their project.

“ Stand on the shoulders of giants.
— Isaac Newton

• Newton wasn't literally standing on the shoulders

of giants. Newton was explaining that his ideas
didn't come from him alone. He relied on the
ideas of those who came before him.

• He described his success as being based on the

work of his predecessors.
What is Scientific Literature?

Scientific literature is the principal medium for

communicating the results of scientific research and, as such,
represents the permanent record of the collective achievements of
the scientific community over time.

It comprises scholarly publications that report original

empirical and theoretical work in the natural and social sciences.
Within an academic field, scientific literature is often referred to
as "the literature“.
True enough that they are standing in the
shoulder of the giants because other research
indexes are not user-friendly and some of their
journal articles are not for free, while Google
Scholar is a freely accessible web search engine
that indexes the full text or metadata of
scholarly literature across an array of
publishing formats and disciplines.
Google Scholar published only Open
Access (OA) journal. OA refers to free,
unrestricted online access to research outputs
such as journal articles and books and is open
to all, with no access fees.

OTHER OPEN ACCESS JOURNAL SITES:

Open Access journal articles are now
available from the giant indexes to the humble
one. What makes the difference among these
indexes is the accessibility of which almost of
the indexes require signing up and logging in
before you can access their journal articles;
while Google Scholar doesn’t need
requirements to access journals. It also
provides both social and scientific journal
articles from different publishers.
Choosing the Right Journal Articles

#1 Avoid journal articles from predatory

journals.
Usually, predatory journal publication is with charge or amount
to be paid and sometimes, the acceptance of journals being
submitted did not undergo peer review and plagiarism and grammar
checking – the reason why some of the journal articles are already
published within few days after submission.

Predatory journals articles usually are not indexed in some

reputable indexes such as Google Scholars and other giant indexes.
You can view the list of predatory journals in Bell’s List of Predatory
journals.
Choosing the Right Journal Articles

#2 Get research journal articles from

reputable publishers and indexes.
Reputable publishers and indexes underwent process before the
journal articles can be published or available to the audience. One of
the processes is the peer review of which experts and scholars are
asked to review and critique the submitted journal article using the
quality criteria and standard of a certain publisher.

All journals that have published in well-known indexes

underwent plagiarism and grammar checking before it will be
available to the public.
Scientific Journal Articles

● Articles in scientific journals are mostly written by active

scientists such as students, researchers, and professors.
According to Niguyen (2017), scientific research and
technological innovation can play a major role in developing
the education or even the economy of a country.

● Scientific research produces new information and knowledge

that can promote technological innovation which, in turn,
produce quality goods and services.
● Scientific research can be considered a driving force for
positive evolution in developing countries. One indicator of
scientific research is the number of publications in peer-
reviewed journals.

● Science literatures have evolved from time to time and reports

of new research findings are important to fuel novel
assumptions and discoveries that can only be in existence
through the publication of Science journals.

● Some Science journals are multidisciplinary, most journals are

highly specialized and they publish articles related to specific
scientific fields. To maintain quality and ensure validity of the
research being published, journals subject the articles through
a rigorous peer-review process, honoring copyrights.
Refining Research Ideas through
Theories

Theory plays a vital role in research. Theory provides

explanation, understanding and meaningfulness
to research. Theory helps to predict facts and to identify
unexplored areas/research areas. Research without
theory is less emphatic to establish the relationship
among attributes, variables or data.

A theory not only explains known facts; it also allows

scientists to make predictions of what they
should observe if a theory is true. Scientific theories
are testable. New evidence should be compatible with a
theory. If it isn't, the theory is refined or rejected.
