EVALUATING

FUNCTIONS
HOW TO EVALUATE FUNCTION?
• To find f(x) for a given value of x is to evaluate the
function f by substituting an input value into the
equation and simplifying when an equation is used to
describe a function.
• The symbol f(x) is read as the “value of f at x” or
simply “f of x.”
• Note that f(x) is another name for y.
REMEMBER THAT:
• a. f(x) means the “value of f at x.” It does not
mean “f times x”.
• b. letters other than f such as G and H or g
and h can also be used.
• c. f is the name of the function and x is the
element of the domain of the function, and f(x)
is the value of the function.
EVALUATING FUNCTION
If the functions f(x) = 2x2 + x – 3, what are the
function values of the following?
1. f(0)
2. f(3)
3. f(-2)
4. f()
5. f()
EVALUATING FUNCTION
If the functions g(x) = , what are the function values
of the following?
1. g(0)
2. g(5)
3. g(-7)
4. g()
5. g()
EVALUATING FUNCTION
If the functions f(x) = x4 - 3x3 – 2, what are the
function values of the following?
1. f(1)
2. f(-2)
3. f(4)
4. f()
5. f()
EVALUATING FUNCTION
Evaluate the value of each function in the given set of
values for x, then identify the coordinates of the points
on the graph of each function.
1. a(x) = x2 + 2x – 8 ; { 1, 5, 0 }
2. b(x) = 2x2 + 5x + 2 ; { -1, 2, 3 }
3. c(x) = x2 + 4 ; { -5, -4, 2 }
4. d(x) = 2x ; { -3, 1, 2 }
5. e(x) = (x – 2)(4x – 3) ; { -3, 2, 6 }
EVALUATING FUNCTION
• Mark started selling snacks in nearby school. In one day he
spends P200 for rent and P25 for each snack item he prepares.
His expenses in a single day can be expressed as the function
C(x) = 25x + 200, where x is the number of items and C(x) is
his daily expenses in peso.
a. How much are his expenses if he prepares 100 snacks
items?
b. How much are his expenses if he prepares 150 snacks
items?
EVALUATING FUNCTION
The function for the height of an object dropped
from a 100 m tall platform at time t seconds is
approximated by s(t) = -5t2 + 100. (This formula is
based on an approximated value for the acceleration g
= 10m/s2 due to gravity.)
a. What is the height of the object after 2 seconds?
b. What is the height of the object after 4 seconds?
