1
Functions of Ventilation
• Supply of Fresh air / removal of stale air
• Thermal comfort maintaining / convective cooling
• Physiological cooling
Factors affecting Ventilation
•Size & function of the room
•No. of occupants / type of the people/ activities
•Heat gained from the equipment & solar
radiation
•Relative humidity
•External air temp. and range of temp.
Ventilation system
•Exhaust system / extraction system
•Air supply system
•Combined supply and exhaust system

2
Optimal ventilation

• Existing wind pattern – speed , direction, temperature, etc.

• How do wind characteristics change during the day & with the
seasons ?
• What is increased air circulation desired for cooling or heating ?
When is it not ?
• When circulation is desired in which room, in which zone at what
level in the room?

3
• Permeable
barrier reduces
wind speed
without
turbulence

• Non-
permeable
barrier creates
turbulence

• Planting to
promote
ventilation
4
• Maximize warming effects of the sun in the winter
• Maximize shade during the summer
• Deflect winter wind away from the buildings.
• Channel summer breezes towards the home.
5
• Use dense windbreaks to protect
MOUNTAIN REGION the home from cold and winter
winds.
• Allow the winter sun to reach
south –facing windows
• Shade south and west windows
and walls from the direct summer
sun, if summer overheating is a
problem.

CONTOUR LAND

Landforms can be used to control & direct wind.

When siting a home a principle should be kept in mind that cold air
sinks and warm air rises.
A house should not be located on top of a hill
where wind speeds are often 30 percent higher.
A house should also not be located in the bottom of the valley where
cold air pocket exists.
These high and low points should be left as natural areas. 8

WIND CHANNEL

• This plan is more effective with

light breezes, since strong
winds move up and over a
barrier and create a different
type of air movement.
• The house itself blocks air
movement and channels
breezes around corners if there
are no barriers.
• plants or screens must be
positioned to create a funneling
effect, which gathers and
concentrates existing currents.
