WHAT IS MARXISM?
Originally developed at the
mid nineteenth century by
two German émigrés living
in Britain, Karl Marx and
Friedrich Engels.
WHAT IS MARXISM?
It refers to a form of anti-
capitalist cultural critique
which specifically targets
those aspects of culture that
are seen as profit driven and
mass-produced under
capitalism.

transformation

Applying Marx to the Mass Media
today
•The institutions of the mass media
are owned by the ruling classes
•These institutions are used to
indoctrinate the masses into
believing capitalism is good for all

exploited just as other workers
therefore the mass media exists to
serve the ideological interests of the
ruling class.

Hegemony
Hegemony is necessary to create
economic stability, and create order
within the liberal market economy
EXAMPLE:
• The influence of United States of America,
from movies, to food, to fashion, and trends.
Specially here in the Philippines, we have
been taken over by the culture of the US, one
example is the franchise of fast food chains,
like KFC, McDonalds, and Burger king.

language, and dress styles
