A unique exemple of hydropower plant: near chamonix,
EDF uses the mer de glace glacier to generate 140 GWh

 150 GWh is equivalent of

the residential
consomption of 50 000
unhabitants

 The « mer de glace »

glacier is the largest french
glacier

The impact of the climate change on plant operation
 1973: plant comissioning at the historic
intake

 2009: Due to the climate change, EDF

built a new intake, 1 km further, 70 m
higher. According to studies of that
time, the new intake could be operated
till 2035

 2020: The new studies confirmed that

the new intake will be ice-uncovered
on 2024 (on air)

2021-2024: Edf is preparing to operate the plant without the glaciers

CO2 emissions on electricity generation

The objectives: Reduce the emissions by:

• Decomissionning plants which emit CO2
• Developping plants with low emissions
