CARBON RESIDUE (CONRADSON)

TEST
ENERGY SOURCE AND UTLIZATION LABORATORY

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

OBJECTIVES

 Tobe able to determine the carbon

residue of a liquid fuel.
WHAT IS CONRADSON TEST ?

Conradson carbon residue is a laboratory

test used to provide an indication of the
coke-forming tendencies of an oil.
Quantitatively, the test measures the
amount of carbonaceous residue
remaining after the oil's evaporation and
pyrolysis.
WHAT IS CARBON RESIDUE ?

Carbon residue is the carbonaceous

residue formed after evaporation and
pyrolysis of a petroleum product. The
residue is not entirely composed of
carbon, but is a coke residue left when
a hydrocarbon stream is completely
distilled.

THEORY
If lubricating oil is heated to a high
temperature in an enclosure where there is a
limited supply of air, the greater part of the
oil will be distilled and there will remain a
residue of carbon. The deposition of such
carbon in machine is intolerable, particularly
in internal combustion engines and air
compressors.
EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE
 Weight the porcelain crucible.
 Fillthe porcelain crucible with
lubricant oil and weight it.
 Put a lid on a porcelain
crucible.
 The combination is then
placed in a wrought iron
crucible covered with chimney
shaped iron hood.

Continue……

 Place the wrought iron crucible

on the burner, heat it slowly for
5 mins.
 Finally strong heating is done
untill no smoke appear from
chimney
 Remove the burner and allow
the apparatus to cool till 15
mins.
 Take out crucible and placed it
on weighting machine and take
the final weight of the crucible.
Observation and calculation

Weight of crucible = W1
Weight of crucible with oil = W2
Weight after experiment = W3

Percent of carbon residue = (weight of residue) × 100

(original weight of sample)
= [W3-W1] × 100
[W2-W1]
Precautions

 Stay away for the equipment, while

doing experiment.
 Take the carbon from the crucible
after 20 to 30 minutes.
 Handle the chemicals carefully
 Don’t increase the flame of burner
rapidly.
 Keep fire extinguisher near by in case
of fire accident.
conclusion

 By measuring the weight of the porcelain crucible, result

the amount of the carbon residue can often reach 5 to
10%, sometimes even 20% of lubricant oil. By
performing this experiment we know about the
percent of carbon residue present in lubricant oil
and fuel. So carbon residue property is used to
choose best lubricant and fuel for machine.
 In Conclusion ,the experiment was done successfully and
the group was successful in attaining the objective.
Effect of excess carbon residue
in lubricant oil and fuel:

 These residues may cause some failure in the purpose of

lubricating machine parts, thus resulting in the failure or
brokerage of the engine and the machine itself.
 This is the one of main contributor of air pollution.
 carbon residues are life threatening to people since these
substances are toxic. Knowing this property of lubricant oil
we can choose best oil.
 lubricants can be classified into grades, which are
determined by the amount of carbon residue formed after
combustion.
