Writing a Topic Outline Explained

A topic outline is a list of main ideas and supporting details arranged in a hierarchical structure. It uses headings, subheadings, and optional sub-subheadings to show the relationship between the parts of a text and how information will be presented. Roman numerals indicate the main headings, capital letters represent subheadings indented beneath them, and Arabic numbers are used for sub-subheadings indented under subheadings. Outlines help organize ideas, simplify writing, and show the logical flow of information from general to specific.

Writing A Topic
Outline
OUTLINE
• Shows how the parts of a text are related to one
another as part that are equal importance, or sections
that are subordinate to a main idea.
What is a Topic Outline?
• A topic outline is a list of ideas arranged in a specific order,
• it shows how information is presented in writing.
• It is a list of the main points and supporting ideas that the writer
intends to discuss in writing.
• It uses keywords or key phrases instead of complete sentences..

20XX 4
• The two basic type of outline are the topic outline
and the sentence outline. A Topic Outline uses
words and phrases to list ideas, while a Sentence
Outline uses complete sentences to define the
subject matter.

HOW TO WRITE A TOPIC OUTLINE

20XX 6
A Topic Outline is divided into three levels: the Headings, the
Subheadings, and the Sub-subheadings

• The headings represent the main ideas and are indicated by Roman numerals.
• The subheadings represent the supporting ideas; they are indicated by capital
letters and are indented.
• Sub-subheadings are the specific details or concrete examples of the
supporting ideas. However, these are optional and only given when necessary.
They are marked by Arabic numbers (e.g., 1, 2, 3 . . .) and are indented.

Factors to Consider in Writing an Outline
• The type of outline that should be used depend on these; the length of
your paper and the complexity of your material, to name only two. when
preparing to write a long paper which presents a lot of material and
complex issues, you might like to make a complete sentence outline that
maps out every detail of your arrangement and its evidence. if you are
going to do a short, relatively uncomplicated paper, perhaps a brief topic
outline would be suffiecient. Not the least important factor in your choice
of outline is your own preference.

• Check the outline for the proper order that is, for a sensible sequence of=r
organization of ideas.
