Learning outcomes
By the end of this tutorial we will have considered some of the issues that
organisations must consider in rewards to reward management, and specifically
the ‘total reward’.
What motivates you to work?
Write down a list of three or four things?
 Number 1
 Number 2
 Number 3
 Number 4
What is your reward package?
 Number 1
 Number 2
 Number 3
 Number 4
From a HR perspective, how would you start to think about rewarding
employees in order to improve organisational performance?
Reward strategies: Total reward
Difference between 'intrinsic' and 'extrinsic' motivation
• Extrinsic = demands; obligations; rewards; deadlines
• Intrinsic = personal satisfaction; accomplishment; self-development

Difference between 'financial' and 'non-financial' reward

• Financial = pay; bonus (competitive v shared); promotion; commission
• Non-financial = incentives (forward-looking, e.g. time off); recognition (retrospective, e.g. praise /
status for achievement)

Questions:
• Which of these matters to you?
• Do you think your view changes over time (as you get older)? Why?
• Do you think reward is important to HR strategy? How?
