What is sustainable development?
• Sustainable development means that we can provide for the needs of current generations, without preventing future
generations from also being able to meet their needs. For example, sustainable methods of food production must
continue to supply all the people on Earth with nutritious food into the future. In contrast, development that is
unsustainable might use up resources that cannot be replaced at the same rate or produce waste that cannot be broken
down. This would mean that future generations would no longer be able to meet their needs in the same way.
How Can This Be Achieved?
• The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development included 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
that aim to transform the world in areas that are critical for both people and the planet. Each of the 17
SDGs is a call to action – a set of targets that will help us to reach the United Nation’s vision for a
better world. Countries need to work together as a global partnership to realise these goals.
• Poverty is when your resources do not fulfil your minimum needs. It can mean not
being able to afford to heat your home, provide for your family or pay your rent.
People in poverty might live in constant stress over decisions about money.
