Generation

Gap
MARIIA RIABONENKO
The book "Generation" by American scientists Neil Howe and William Strauss was
published in 1991. Her main theory is that every 20-25 years there is a change of
generations in the world.
People within one generation are united by common values, behavior and habits.
Types of
generations
Generation X

Generation Y

Generation Z
Generation X
(approximately
1961 - 1981 year
of birth)
A huge number of workaholics grew up in this age group. They
matured early, because they grew up in families where parents
worked a lot and for a long time. Therefore, independence is instilled
in them from childhood. Generation "X" is used to relying primarily
on themselves. The opportunity to realize oneself, to show this same
independence is important for such people in their careers as well.
Generation Y
or millennials
(approximately
1982 - 2004 year
of birth)
They were born when the USSR collapsed and the crisis of the 90s occurred. They grew when the Internet appeared
and all information became available at the same time.
One of the most noticeable features of Y is their dependence on knowledge, which they find not in books from
libraries, but on Internet resources. This is a generation that loves to learn, because learning for millennials is
something interesting and original.
What could previously be learned only from teachers and lecturers
becomes easily accessible for players. This causes another feature
of this generation — excessive trust in information provided on
online services, especially without any censorship on it.
For this generation, self-realization comes to the fore. It cannot be
said that they are not interested in the family, however, career
growth remains in the first place.
Generation
Z
(approximate years
of birth from 2005
to the present)
While other generations are discussing the "technologies of the future", for this generation the "future" has already arrived. They
do not read printed newspapers, do not imagine life without the Internet and were born with pages in social networks. They won't
get lost because there is a navigator, they won't be stupid because they ask Siri or Google. If baby boomers are diskettes, "xs" are
CD disks, millennials are flash drives, then generation Z would no longer be a physical medium. They can be compared to cloud
storage. They are not an addition to the Internet. They are the Internet.
But technology isn't the only thing that sets Z apart from generations before them.
As psychology professor Jean Twenge writes in her book, they also differ in how they spend their time, how
they relate to religion, sexuality and politics.
Z reject once-sacred social taboos and want diversity in their lives and careers.
More than previous generations, they are obsessed with security, focused on tolerance and overcoming
social inequality.
