CONNECTED INDUSTRIES

• The oil and gas industry is identified as one of

the front-runners for loT connectivity which
includes remote access to heavy equipment and
machinery, from manufacturing to production.
• The oil and gas industry is making headway in
realizing the potential of loT by making things
much easier for companies to carry out their
daily operations.
3. CONNECTED BUILDINGS

• Connected building projects involve facility-automation to reduce energy costs.

• Smart buildings use information and communication technologies (ICT) to enable
automated building operations and control. They can enhance occupants’ comfort
and productivity while using less energy than a conventional building.
4. CONNECTED CARS

• With smart cities adopting loT for their traffic

management, it is no longer surprising for the latest
car models to be equipped with sensors and network
connectivity. Majority of projects relating to smart
vehicles revolve around vehicle diagnostics and
monitoring.
• A connected car is a vehicle which can access the
internet through an inbuilt connectivity system. It
offers smart features such as internet connectivity,
remote operation of vehicle functions and advanced
security features.
5. SMART ENERGY

• Majority of smart energy projects focus on

developing smart grids for renewable
energy and infrastructure.
• Smart grid technology is enabling the
effective management and distribution of
renewable energy sources such as solar,
wind, and hydrogen. The smart grid
connects a variety of distributed energy
resource assets to the power grid.
CHALLENGES OF IOT
BUT WHILE THINGS MAY LOOK GOOD USING IOT, THERE ARE ISSUES RAISED
IN ADOPTING IT FULLY.
1. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

• Industries normally identify different requirements,

especially depending on the type of industry they
belong to. Those in the food industry may require
monitoring of perishable goods, from production and
packaging to shipping. An automobile manufacturer
may have the same process, but since products are
different, requirements may also change. Food will
require data regarding temperature levels, whereas cars
will require mechanical precision.
2. CONNECTIVITY

• With the varying connections wired and

wireless, as well as the different protocols
governing each connection, it will be a
challenge to come up with an loT project
concerning such protocols.
• Connectivity is a critical component of the
Internet of Things. IoT devices rely on
networks to communicate with gateways,
applications, servers, routers, and other IoT
devices. This communication transmitting
and receiving data, enables IoT devices to
perform the functions they were designed
for.
3. POWER REQUIREMENTS

• IT devices need to run on

batteries as majority of these
devices are mobile. The
challenge, therefore, is how to
extend the battery life on such
devices, especially those used in
critical procedures, such as
health, disaster management, and
safety.
4. SECURITY

• One of the most highlighted issues in the application of IT

is data security. Confidential information such as patients'
records or employees' profiles are considered at risk.
Security also includes system integrity, with malicious acts
such as hacking and viruses proliferating online.
• Since some IoT devices are used for healthcare or human
protection, their security can be crucial for people’s lives.
Another important reason to prioritize security when
developing IoT systems is to keep their data safe. Smart
devices gather tons of sensitive data, including personally
identifiable information, which is required to be protected
by various cybersecurity laws, standards, and regulations.
The compromise of such information can result in lawsuits
and fines. It can also lead to reputational damage and the
loss of customer trust.
5. DEVELOPMENT

• The task of creating IoT projects may seem

daunting, so one of the challenges identified is
how to expand the capabilities of developers, and
not just experts, in order to create more "smart
things.“
• There are not many mature business processes,
and developers often lack adequate guidance on
lifecycle maintenance and management, best
practices, standards, and other protocols Finding
the right experts can also be difficult, as the
industry is fairly new and growing faster than the
developer base
6. SERVICES

• With data collected from loT, it is important as well to

determine where all this will go and to identify the
platform in which these loT applications will be
placed. Nowadays, cloud services offer end-to-end
solutions to a number of loT projects.

• As a massive number of sensors will be installed, data

collection would mainly be concerned with the idea of
how to implement it efficiently, where relative data
compressing would be considered.  To ensure the
security of data collection, sensitive data needs to be
protected by ciphering and leveraging the distributed
system.
AUTOMATION

• With the available technology and

standards for computer system
interconnection, the demand for system
automation is on the rise. Colloquially
called "computerization," having an
automated system means automated
business processes, operations, service
provider, monitoring, and even tools.
