FOOD SECURITY

Food Security
AT A GLANCE
FOOD SECURITY

‘’ A situation that exists when all people, at

all times, have physical, social and
economic access to sufficient, safe and
nutritious food that meets their dietary
needs and food preferences for an active
and healthy life’’. (FAO,2016)

4
What comes after the
MDGs?
From a financing standpoint, more concessional
resources from the Asian Development Fund could be
mobilized to support countries to achieve a minimum
level for income, hunger, development, health, and
environmental protection, among other areas.

o Income poverty: Unfinished Business

o Human Development: Sluggish Progress
o Environment: A Burgeoning Challenge

CURRENT PROBLEM

6 DD/MM/20XX
Food Security (Malaysia)
during Pandemic COVID 19
o Panic Buying may lead to overpricing of food goods
o Long queues, empty shelves at supermarkets & shocking pic
of vege’s being left rot at farms.
o Agricultural waste- high demand but lack of logistic SOPs-
Disruptions in the food chain are minimal as the food supply
has been adequate and markets have been stable so far
except for isolated cases in the Cameron Highlands.
o In general food availability is not a problem. The problem will
be – and there already has been some minimal impact from
this – with the movement of the food from the farm to
consumers

Food Security (Malaysia)
during Pandemic COVID 19

While panic buying has significantly subsided, and

logistics issues for fresh produce are quickly
being resolved, these images have sparked some
concern about how self-sufficient the country is in
food to endure future emergencies and possible
trade disruptions.

COVID 19

2 main initiatives as per current Food security scenarios

in Malaysia:

(1) National AgroFood Policy-NAP4 (2011-2020)

o The new direction is geared towards ensuring national food security and boosting revenues from
the agricultural
o centered on food security, rural development and spurring domestic investments and
international trade, aimed to get farmers, livestock breeders and fishermen out of poverty .
o The document sets five new directions that could be achieved through 18 strategies and 51
initiatives. The new direction is hoped to speed up the progress and achieve the NAP’s target by
2020.

o The agro-food sub sector will be the main focus in the
agriculture sector in order to achieve the agenda of
(2) National Food improving Malaysia’s food security and generating higher
income for agriculture frontliners
Security Policy o Other areas of focus include strengthening the food supply
chain, improving support and delivery services, enhancing
technological knowledge and promoting greater compliance

SUMMARY
o Any work initiatives needed first application to MITI for the
approval letter, awaiting the national food security policy by govt
anytime soon. Try to match the SOPs vs current core business
model in Food Industry.
o Food banks, buying consideration for access supplies to others,
official guidance for 2 week food supplies-challenges
o There is undoubtedly a need to avoid “business as usual”
practices, to think out of the box and accelerate efforts to
develop sustainable and modern food systems, e.g., to reduce
the cost of aseptic lab-grown meat, reduce the cost of food
waste recovery and reutilization in the food chain, and develop
new and large food supply chains based on insects’ and
microalgae proteins.
