Characteristics

Of a volcano

Volcanoes are openings, or vents where

lava, tephra (small rocks) and steam erupt
onto the Earth’s surface.
01   A volcano is formed by
eruptions of lava and ash.

02   Volcanoes are usually cone

shaped mountains or hills.

03
When magma reaches the
  Earth’s surface it is called
lava. When the lava cools, it
forms a rock.
04   Volcanic eruptions can
happen at destructive and
constructive boundaries

05   Some volcanoes happen

underwater, along the
seabed or ocean floor

06   Magma rises through cracks

or weaknesses in the Earth’s
crust
04
Pressure builds up inside the
Earth

When this pressure is release,

05
for example, as a result of plate
movement, magma explodes to
the surface causing a volcanic
eruption.

06
The lava from the eruption
cools to form new crust. Over
time, after several eruptions,
the rock builds up and a
volcano forms.
Volcano
A volcano is an opening in a
planet or moon’s crust through
which molten rock, hot gases, and
other materials erupt. Volcanoes
often form a hill or mountain as
layers of rock and ash build up
from repeated eruptions.
Volcanoes are classified as active,
dormant, or extinct.
