WHAT IS
ROCK
?
Rocks is a solid mass o f geological
materials. Geological materials include
individual mineral crystals, inorganic non-
mineral solids like glass, pieces broken
f r o m other rocks, and even fossils.
Did you know that rocks
undergo f r o m stress?
Do rocks respond the same towards
different types o f stress?
No, rocks do not respond the same
to different conditions.
What are the types of stress in rocks?
There are four types of stress, which
are:

Compression
Tension
Shear
Stress Fault
What
is
com
pres
sion
Compression is when a
rock is squeezed to
itself or to other rocks
due to movement in the
Earth's crust, this type
of stress can cause a
rock to fold or fracture.
What is
Shear Stress?
Shear stress is when rocks are put under stress
due to contrary motion, especially along transform
plate boundaries where plates sliude past each other,
this causes rocks to twist o r break.
Do stress in rocks
a f f e c t the earth?
Yes, it's not only the rocks that are
subjected to stress, but the entirety o f
the earth's crustas well. This stress
causes the shape o f the crust to
change. When the deformed crust
moves, it leads to a major change in the
earth's surface, such as depressions,
highlands, and wide plateaus.
