What is Discourse?
 comes from the Latin word discursus, which means
"running to and fro.“ or exchange of ideas either
written or verbal, conversation or speech
 the physical act of transferring information "to and
fro," the way a runner might
 Discourse types, also known as rhetorical modes,
are types of speaking and writing.
 Discourse is generally understood to encompass
almost any type of communication whether written
or oral
What is Written Discourse?
• involves the structure, coherence, logical development, and
range of linguistic resources in a written text. Linguistic
resources refer to grammar and vocabulary, and the variety of
grammatical structures and vocabulary used in your writing.
You need to show a wide range of different grammatical
structures and vocabulary used correctly to gain maximum
points in this area.

• written discourse consists of novels, poems, diaries, plays, film


scripts etc. that may provide records of decades-long shared
information.
Types of Discourse

1. NARRATION/NARRATIVE DISCOURSE
• It simply tells a story. And in the process of
telling a story a description can be a helping
device to make the story more interesting.
• Narration involves several features, such as:
 Point of view (first person or third person)
 Resolution
 Conflict
 Characters
 Plot
 Setting

2. DESCRIPTION / DESCRIPTIVE DISCOURSE


• Expresses what the author actually sees, feels,
touches, tastes and smells and other sense of
impressions, that he/she experiences toward a
person, thing and other animate or inanimate
objects. The author usually uses adjectives,
participles and other modifiers
• An effective piece of descriptive writing should
make the reader feel as id she is experiencing what
is being described

3. EXPOSITION / EXPOSITORY DISCOURSE


• Exposition is a type of discourse intended to give
information about (or an explanation of) an issue,
subject, method, or idea.
• to inform the audience about a particular topic.

• used to explain or describe a particular concept or


idea. It can be found in various forms, such as
textbooks, manuals, and academic articles.

4. ARGUMENTATION / ARGUMENTATIVE
DISCOURSE
• A type of discourse that centers on a thesis. Used
for proposing a solution or defending a proposal or
criticizing existing practices, systems and
approaches.
• This type of discourse aims to persuade the
audience to accept a particular point of view or
opinion. It usually involves presenting evidence,
logical reasoning, and counterarguments to support
a claim.
