WHAT IS CABLE BRIDGE ?
 It is Cable supported bridge in
which one or multiple pylons
(Tower) are installed in the middle
of the bridge and girder (Deck)
segments are connected to the
pylons by a cable.

 Examples of Cable Bridges :

RAM JHULA (NAGPUR)
 Bandra Worli Sea Link (5600m)
 Vindyasagar Setu / Hooghly

Bridge (823m)
 Western Freeway (Mumbai)

 Ram Jhula (Nagpur)
STRUCTURE OF CABLE BRIDGE:
Idea inspired by the
drawbridges of medieval
castles in 1595.
Later system developed after
WW-II arroundd 1960.
Main Componets of this
bridges:
 DECK – Concrete & Steel
 TOWER – Concrete & Steel
 CABLES – 270 grade high
strength wires
 FOUNDATION – Reinforced 3
concrete depending soil

DIFFERENT KINDS OF CABLE BRIDGES :
Based on stay cables and support columns arrangement
different types are :

FORCES ACTING IN CABLE BRIDGE:

 WORKING PRINCIPLE –
The towers transfer
the cable forces tension to
the foundations through
the vertical compression.

 Basically two Forces acts

on cable stayed bridge:

1. TENSION
2. COMPRESSION 6
WORKING IN A NUTSHELL

In cable bridges,
 Loads creates vertically downward acting STRESS.
 Stress converts to TENSION in cables attached to deck and
central pillar.
 Transfer tension to pillar in form of COMPRESSIVE LOAD.
 Pillar should be strong to overcome shearing stress.
7
 Thus, for system to work, a balance required between
TENSILE & COMPRESSIVE FORCES.

ADVANTAGES OF USING CABLE
BRIDGE : (COMPARING SUSPENSION BRIDGE )

1. Any NO. of towers.

2. Less No. of cables.
3. Better choice across river
banks with loose alluvial
mud.
4. Able to Withstand the
shocks of earthquakes.
5. Cost effective.
6. Mean of spanning medium
to long distances. 9
DOWNSIDES :

 Bridges are cable of withstanding of

heavy axial tension, but weak against
compressive and bending.
 Areas of heavy winds special
measures need to be taken containing
swaying and vibrations.

10
MECHANICS INVOLVED :

In the study of cable bridge, the major forces involved are :

• Force applied
perpendicular to area
TENSILE cross section of object.
STRESS • T = F/A
• Unit – Pascal (Pa)
• Results in elongation.

• Physical forces presses

COMPRESSIV object inward.
• F.c = F/A
E STRESS
• Unit – Pascal (Pa)
• Results in shortening. 11
