What is a
Bloodborne Pathogen?
 A virus or bacteria carried in the blood

 Let’s call them what

Bloodborne Pathogens
We Are Most Concerned About
 HIV: Human Immunodeficiency Virus

 Hepatitis B

 Both require direct blood-to-blood contact


Acquired Immune Deficiency
Syndrome or AIDS
 HIV is the virus that causes AIDS

 AIDS is often fatal,

Hepatitis B
 Causes hepatitis

 Attacks the liver and can be fatal

 Take full precautions

 Very durable virus


How Bloodborne Pathogens
Are Transmitted
 Both HIV and hepatitis B require
direct blood-to-blood contact
 Open cuts, sores, blisters, sunburn,
acne, body piercings, fresh tattoos
 Eyes, nose and mouth

 Other non-work-related means

How To Protect Yourself
 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

 Remove PPE that is torn or punctured

 Replace PPE that is torn or punctured

 Remove PPE following first-aid incident

Safe Hygiene Practices
 Disposal of PPE

 Hand and/or body washing

 No eating, drinking or smoking

 Do not handle contact lenses


Decontaminating The Area
 Clean the entire Area

 Clean all tools you’ve used

materials, too
 Wear PPE while
you do this


Always Report a
Potential Exposure Incident
 Let your supervisor know right away

 Document the incident

 Document the people involved

 Assume all blood is infected
