This document outlines emergency spill response procedures for ammonia. It details 5 primary steps: 1) obtain a monitoring device, 2) monitor outside the mechanical room, 3) enter the room if levels are below 50ppm, 4) shut down the ammonia system, and 5) report significant releases. It provides details for each step, such as calibrating monitors, thresholds for evacuation, and locations of valves to shut off the system.

to be used by anyone responding to Ammonia Alarm in….facility. Emergency Spill Response to Ammonia PRIMARY STEPS 1) OBTAIN HAND HELD MONITORING DEVICE PRIOR TO ENTRY 2) MONITOR AREA OUTSIDE MECHANICAL ROOM PRIOR TO ENTRY 3) ENTRY INTO MECHANICAL ROOM 4) SHUT DOWN AMMONIA SYSTEM 5) REPORT ALL SIGNIFICANT RELEASES TO DEHS *NOTE: Must verify YELLOW (25 ppm) and RED (50 ppm) alarm lights BSAC gets notified at 25 ppm. Emergency Spill Response to Ammonia PROCEDURES Step #1: Obtain hand held monitoring device prior to entry **(State location where monitors should be stored.)** A.) Access Ammonia Monitor B.) Fresh air calibrate monitor before arrive on site 1) Notify Contact Person 2) Contact DEHS HAZMAT in the even that a Red Alarm exceeds 15 minutes. 3) First responder on site will call 911 anytime they feel at risk to personal injury. Emergency Spill Response to Ammonia PROCEDURES Step #2: Monitor area outside Mechanical Room prior to entry. A.) Monitor (air) atmosphere for Ammonia B.) If levels reach 50 PPM then evacuate the area and call DEHS or call 911 after hours or Zone 1 person on call. **NOTE: Phone will be installed on ground floor 30 feet inside entrance door. Emergency Spill Response to Ammonia PROCEDURES Step #3: Entry into Mechanical Space. A.) If levels are below 50 PPM, yellow light, then enter Mechanical Room and shut off Ammonia System B.) If levels are above 50 PPM, red light, inside Mechanical Room then evacuate to outside of room. C.) Continue to ventilate the room, monitor, and re-enter once below 50 PPM. Emergency Spill Response to Ammonia PROCEDURES Step #3: Entry into Mechanical Space. (contd.) A.) If red alarm continues over 15 minutes, person on-site will call ???? To call DEHS HAZMAT and Zone 1 office. B.) After hours, ???? Will contact Zone 1 personnel via Aon call @ list. Emergency Spill Response to Ammonia PROCEDURES Step #4: Manually Shut Down Ammonia System A.) Valves are located ?????? B.) Close liquid line. C.) Valve off receiver and condenser line. D.) Label these 4 gated valves for Emergency Shut Down. E.) After Ammonia levels have dissipated to safe levels, manually switch ventilation off high speed. *NOTE: Yellow alarm shuts down system (electronically) compressors.
