Case Study
A young woman, named Zahra Haider, has engaged in premarital sex. She is a Pakistani
writer and human rights activist. In 2016, she published an article on her sexual experiences as
a Pakistani woman which raised quite a lot of eyebrows in the society.
She was taken away from her mother at the age of nine where she was raised by her
two household patriarchs, her grandmother, and her father. Her father left her in the care of her
grandmother and abandoned her afterwards. She was unaccepted for her refusal to be
submissive and obedient, neglected of maternal love, empathy and understanding. She was an
avid believer of remaining, "chaste," until marriage despite the fact that she stopped believing
in religion at the age of 13. After being around peers that were broad minded and were engaging
in such activities too, she claimed having anxiety and couldn't try something new unless she
had others who were doing it too. Once she saw that her peers were also engaging in pre-marital
sex, she took the initiative too. And after doing it for the first time she didn't feel guilty about
having sexual relations and stopped having any qualms about not abiding by religio-cultural
values. However, she did feel a little shame due to the societal conditioning. Both her parents
were shocked about her article and while her mother understood her motives, her father couldn't
comprehend her intentions. She considers her sexuality to be her own, personal choice and that
was by she believes that there is nothing wrong with having sex before marriage.
