What is a Project?
 A temporary endeavor undertaken to
create a new product or service.
 A project can be considered to be any series of
activities and tasks that:
A. Have a specific objective to be completed
within certain specifications
B. Have defined start and end dates
C. Have funding limits
D. Consume resources (i- e money, people,
equipment)
Dr Kifayat: Engr Proj Mgmt

What is a Project?
Project Objective

An Objective is defined as “the target”.

It specifies the critical results that must be

achieved upon completion of a project.

What is a Project?
A project is a unique undertaking
that consists of
A. A specific objective
B. A series of tasks
C. Defined scope and specifications
D. Schedule for completion
E. Budget
F. Resource consumption

What is a Project?
Project Scope

The definition of the required output of

a project is known as the project
scope.

Objective and Scope
of recommended text book

The overall objective of the text book is to improve

the performance of (environmental remediation)
projects through increased understanding and sound
implementation of modern project management
planning processes.

In terms of scope, it should be understood that the

focus of this book is on modern project management
theory, tools, and techniques and their practical
application.

Project Management
Project Management (PM)
PM is the art and science of planning,
organizing, integrating, directing, and
controlling all committed resources –
throughout the life of a project – to
achieve the predetermined objectives of
scope, quality, time, cost, and customer
satisfaction.

Dr Kifayat: Engr Proj Mgmt

Project Manager
The person appointed to coordinate
and manage the project to a set plan.

The Project Manager is responsible for

Meeting the specification
Controlling the cost
Meeting the targeted completion dates

Dr Kifayat: Engr Proj Mgmt

03/27/23 14
Project Manager
The Project Manager is not responsible
for
Political interference
Natural disaster
Strike action
Wars

But will still get blamed if the project goes

wrong.

Project Management
Traditional Project Management

Traditional PM focus on three main areas:

1. Cost

2. Schedule

3. Achieving specifications

Dr Kifayat: Engr Proj Mgmt

03/27/23 19
Project Management
Modern Project Management

Modern PM has a much broader range of

focus; dealing with the issues of quality,
risk management, human resource
management, leadership, organizational
structure, and information systems (to
name only a few)

Dr Kifayat: Engr Proj Mgmt

03/27/23 20
Modern Project Management
Areas of difference
The two areas where modern PM differs greatly from
traditional PM are
a) Definition of project success
b) Business responsibilities of project manager

a) Definition of project success

Project success is not only limited to complete the
project within schedule and budget while meeting
specifications but customer’s overall
satisfaction is significant.
Dr Kifayat: Engr Proj Mgmt
03/27/23 21
Project Management
b) Business responsibilities of project
manager
Another success factor, which relates
directly to the project manager’s business
responsibilities, is whether or not the
project earned its expected profit and
paved the way for new avenues of business
growth.
In short, the project manager in modern PM
has responsibility for customer satisfaction
as well as business profit and loss.
Dr Kifayat: Engr Proj Mgmt
03/27/23 22
Project Management
PM is a profession
The development of PM as a profession in
its own right is reflected in the literature,
the activities of professional organizations,
and PM degree programs offered by
colleges and universities.

Successful PM criteria
The criteria for successful PM are as follows:

 Written long term and short term objectives

 A written scope of work
 A work break down structure
 A detailed schedule
 An identified project team
 A project budget

Dr Kifayat: Engr Proj Mgmt

03/27/23 24
Properties of Project
A project must have the following properties:
 Goal oriented

 Temporary nature

 Clear start and end

 Consumption of resources

 Certain degree of uniqueness

 Coordinated activities

Dr Kifayat: Engr Proj Mgmt

03/27/23 25
Types of Project
Four main types:
Project Duration
Type A: more than 18 months
Type B: 09 to 18 months
Type C: 03 to 09 months
Type D: less than 03 months

Note: These different types are based on

observation; this is not a rule.
Dr Kifayat: Engr Proj Mgmt
03/27/23 26
Types of Project
Risks and project types

The level of risk involved in a project is directly

related to duration.

Risks involved are more in long duration

projects i.e. exchange rate

Sometimes a short duration project is categorized

as type A because of the complexity and risks
involved in the project. (i-e rescue services)
Dr Kifayat: Engr Proj Mgmt
03/27/23 27
Criteria for project success
Criteria for success
 To specification

 On time

 Within budget

 Good quality

 Meets market demand

 Political/social/religious acceptance

 Safe in service

Criteria for failure

A failure to meet just one of the success criteria
Dr Kifayat: Engr Proj Mgmt
03/27/23 28
Causes of project failure
o Specification is ill-defined
o Project no longer has a high priority
o No one person appears to be in command
o Schedule is too optimistic
o Project plan is not used to manage the
project
o Insufficient resources deployed
o No formal communication process in place
o No risk management process
Dr Kifayat: Engr Proj Mgmt
03/27/23 29
Project Specification
Project specification is required to facilitate
both the customer and the project team.
It should include the following information
o Title of the project

o Objective

o Project constraints

o Resource requirements

o Project schedule

o Project cost

Dr Kifayat: Engr Proj Mgmt

03/27/23 30
Title of the project
A specific title for a project helps in
identifying one project from others.
Where there are several similar projects it
may be useful to allocate a specific code to
each project.
Examples:
Development of a new product, New tooling
for a product, Plant design, Plant erection
and construction of a road, bridge or dam.

Dr Kifayat: Engr Proj Mgmt

03/27/23 31
Project constraints
Each project has many types of constraints,
which should be elaborated explicitly to
facilitate the design and implementation
process.
Examples:
Capital constraints, Plant and equipment
constraints, Environmental constraints etc

Is time a constraint?
Dr Kifayat: Engr Proj Mgmt
03/27/23 32
Resource requirements

The definition of objectives and

constraints paves the way to estimate
the resource requirements.
All types of resources such as materials,
equipment should be estimated and the
availability of the required resources for
project completion must be worked out.

Dr Kifayat: Engr Proj Mgmt

03/27/23 33
Project Schedule
Project Schedule shows the time frame
of start and completion dates of
activities constituting the project.
Project Cost
An estimate of the project cost enables the
organization to evaluate the feasibility of the
project and to manage the capital
requirements of the project.

Dr Kifayat: Engr Proj Mgmt

03/27/23 34
PM Resources
Projects consume resources in reaching
their objectives. Resources available to
the Project Manager are:
 Money
 Personnel
 Equipment
 Materials
 Information/technology
 facilities
