MATHEMATICS 10

QUARTER 1 – WEEK 3
EXPLORING OTHER
TYPES OF
SEQUENCES

Leonard of Pisa or Fibonacci played an important role
in reviving ancient mathematics and made significant
contributions of his own. Liber abaci introduced the
Hindu-Arabic place-valued decimal system and the use
of Arabic numerals into Europe
Examples:
1. Find the 10th term of the sequence
1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,…
Solution:
F10 = F9 + F8
Note that F7= 13 and F8 = 21, Thus
F10 = (F8+F7) +F8
F10 = (21+13) +21
F10 = 55
2. What is the 10th term of the sequence
2,2,4,6,10,16,26,42,68,110,….
Solution:
F10 = F9 +F8
F10= (F8+F7) +F8
F10= (42+26) +42
F10 = 68+42
F10 = 110

Therefore the 10th term of the Fibonacci

sequence is 110.
Exercise.
In 1,1,2,3,5,8,…..
Find the
a. 15th term
b. 20th term
c. 25 term
Answer:
1. 610
2. 6 765
3. 75 025
C. Other types of sequences are defined
recursively by a specific rule.

A combination of any of the four fundamental

operations is used to determine the terms of
that sequence.
Example:
1. Find the next term of the sequence
2,3,6,18,108,1 944 ….

Solution:
Observe that each term after the second term is
the product of the two preceding terms
a3 = (a2)(a1) and a4= (a3)(a2)
Thus the next term of the sequence is the product
of the 3rd and 4th terms of this sequence
a5= (a4)(a3)
a5= (18)(6)
a5= 108

Problem Solving Involving
Sequences and Series
(Binomial Pattern)
Blaise Pascal was a very influential French
mathematician and philosopher who contributed to
many areas of mathematics. He worked on conic
sections and projective geometry and in
correspondence with Fermat he laid the foundations
for the theory of probability.
Pascal’s Triangle

Pascal’s Triangle

Using the Pascal’s Triangle:

(x+y) 4 = x4 + 4x3y+6x2y2+4xy3+y4
*Just go to row 4 and get the integers: 1 4 6 4 1,
then write the exponent of x variable in descending
order and y variable in ascending order.
2. (x+y) 6

Get row 6 and the integers are 1 6 15 20 15 6 1

then write the exponent of the variable x in descending and y
variable in ascending order. So the expanded form is
x6+ 6x5y +15x4y2+ 20x3y3 + 15x2y4 + 6xy5 + y 6
3. (x+y) 8

Get row 8 and the integers are 1, 8, 28, 56, 70, 56, 28, 8, 1 and n
write the exponent of the variable x in descending and y variable
in ascending order. So the expanded form is
x8+ 8x7y +28x6y2+ 56x5y3 + 70x4y4 + 56x3y5 + 28x2y 6 +8xy7 + y8
4. (x+y) 10

Get row 10 and the integers are 1,10,45,120,200,252,200,120,45,10,1and n

write the exponent of the variable x in descending and y variable in
ascending order. So the expanded form is
X10+10x9y+45x8y2+120x7y3+200x6y4+252x5y5+200x4y6+120x3y7+45x2y8+10xy9+y10
How about if we have to expand the following.
1.(2x + 3y) 4
2. (2x + 5y) 5
3. (3x – 2y) 6
Solution:1.
1,4,6,4,1
(2x)4+4(2x)3(3y)+6(2x)2(3y)2+4(2x)(3y)3+(3y)4

16x4+4(8x3)(3y)+6(4x2)(9y2)+4(2x)(27y3)+81y4

16x4+96x3y+216x2y2+216xy3+81y4
