Role of career in a person’s life Making the right career choice is
important due to the following reasons:

Career determines a person’s state of life.

Career affects a person’s self esteem. Hence a person can be

happy or demoralized if a person was ‘pushed’ into a career.

Identity – careers give people identity. Some careers naturally

seem to define who a person is.
Career Choice
Career offers opportunities for living standard and lifestyles

A person’s social relations likely to be determined by their career .

Career offers self development opportunity especially for upward

progress thereby improving a persons living standard

How to determine one is in the right or wrong career?
The following questions are important as guidelines:
Can you work more than the returns would
give you?
Would you continue working with or without
promotion, salary increment etc.?
Do you enjoy the job? i.e. Do you have a
passion for your work?
Do you naturally work without a struggle or
being pushed to go to work?

Note: A person will be in the wrong career if he/she

ENTREPRENEURSHIP
57
58
Entrepreneurship is the act of creating a business or businesses while

bearing all the risks with the hope of making a profit.

Entrepreneur -a person who has a home business idea and sets up

their first online store on the side, or a freelancer just starting out.

Importance of entrepreneurship

59
Entrepreneurs create jobs:

Without entrepreneurs, jobs wouldn’t exist. Entrepreneurs take on the risk of

employing themselves. Their ambition to grow their business eventually leads to the

creation of new jobs. As their business continues to grow, even more jobs are created.

Entrepreneurs innovate

: Some of the greatest technologies in today’s society have come from businesses.

Technological advances come from a need to solve problems, create efficiencies, or

improve the world. In periods where there’s more advancement in technology, there’s

usually an entrepreneur to thank for it.

60
ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Entrepreneurs create change:

Entrepreneurs dream big—many aim to make the world better with their

products, ideas, or businesses. So naturally, some of their ideas will make a

worldwide change. They might create a new product that solves a burning

problem or takes on the challenge of exploring something never explored before.

61
Entrepreneurs give to society:

While some have a notion of the rich being evil and greedy, they often do more for the greater good than

the average person. They make more money and thus pay more taxes, which helps fund social services.

Entrepreneurs are some of the biggest donors to charities and nonprofits for various causes. Some seek to

invest their money in creating solutions to help poorer communities have access to things we take for

granted, like clean drinking water and good health care.

Entrepreneurs add to national income:

Entrepreneurship generates new wealth in an economy. New ideas and improved products or services

from entrepreneurs allow for the growth of new markets and new wealth.

BUSINESS STARTUP

STAGES IN BUSINESS SETUP
The Seed Stage
The seed stage of your business lifecycle is when your business
is just a thought or an idea. Most seed-stage companies will
have to overcome the challenge of market acceptance and
pursue one opportunity. Don't try to take on too much at once.
At this stage of the business the focus your focus should be on
making sure your idea works well with your
skills, experience, and passions. You'll also need to decide on
a business ownership structure, come up with a business plan,
and get funding.
You might be able to self-fund your business, get investments
from friends and family, or apply for government grants. If you
have some sort of existing client base for your business already,
you may be able to get them to invest.

67
STAGES IN BUSINESS SETUP
The Start-Up Stage
Once your business legally exists, you'll need to make sure you can
provide whatever products or services you're planning on selling, and
establish a customer base and market presence. You might need to
change your business strategy or raise more cash if your expenses are
higher than anticipated.

The Growth Stage

If your business is growing, that means that your revenue and
customer base are also likely growing. You might need to hire and
train new employees to handle with the additional workload that
comes with a growing business.
You may also need to invest additional money in the business to
maintain your success. If you don't have enough cash available, you
might be able to take out a loan through the Bank or Sacco.

68
STAGES IN BUSINESS SETUP
The Established Stage
It's still a lot of work to maintain your business once it's become self-
sustaining or even profitable. Make sure you're maintaining or growing
your revenue stream by keeping up with any new developments in the
industry or changing customer preferences.

The Expansion Stage

If your original business is doing reasonably well, or if it can't grow
anymore without a new customer base, it may be time for the business
to expand into a new market. In some cases it may be easier for you to
expand into a small, niche market, because a larger market is likely to
be more competitive and may take longer to break into.
Make sure you do plenty of planning and research before deciding
where to invest your resources. You may want to focus on markets that
are related to your existing business.

69
STAGES IN BUSINESS SETUP
The Decline Stage
In the decline stage, sales, profit, and cash flow all decline. A business owner
might be forced to sell or close their business if they cannot sufficiently cut costs
or increase their profits. A business might be able to avoid declining by
reinventing itself, or branching out into new markets or technologies. That way,
it can reposition itself and begin new growth in the marketplace.

The Exit Stage

There are a few ways you might leave a business that you started. You might be
able to sell your business and start a new venture, the business might not have
worked out, or you might be ready to completely retire from work.

70
FINANCIAL LITERACY
71
FINANCIAL LITERACY
Financial literacy is the ability to understand and effectively use

various financial skills, including personal financial

management, budgeting, and investing.

The meaning of financial literacy is the foundation of your

relationship with money, and it is a lifelong journey of learning.

One example of financial literacy is the management of day-to-day

expenses.

72
Financial literacy aspects:

1. Budget your money. “Pay yourself first” ...

2. Taxation – it's not all yours. “Understand your

true earnings and how they are taxed”

3. Borrowing. “Not all money is created equal”

4. Plan before investing - Think about and map

your goals

5. Invest to achieve your goals.

73
