MODULE: PROBLEM SOLVING

Objectives: At the end of this course students will be able to do the following:
▪ Define what a problem is
▪ Determine how to solve problems using problem solving model
▪ Identify the characteristics of an effective Problem Solver
▪ Describe the approach to problem solving and decision making

Introduction:
Everyone must have felt at least once in his or her life how wonderful it would be if we could solve
a problem at hand preferably without much difficulty or even with some difficulties. Unfortunately,
problem solving is an art at this point and there are no universal approaches one can take to solving
problems. Basically, one must explore possible avenues to a solution one by one, until one becomes
across a right path to a solution.
Problems are always there in our everyday work life pursuit so being a confident problem solver is
really important to your success. As one gains experience in solving problems, one develops own
techniques and strategies, though they are often intangible. Thus, the guessing is not arbitrary
guessing but educated one.
What is Problem Solving?
PROBLEM means or is regarded as an unwelcomed situation, so Problem solving is finding
solutions to complex (different and many) problems
PROBLEM SOLVING MODEL
Problem solving is a process and it has some basic steps
- Define the Problem
- Gather information about the problem
- Generate alternative
- Evaluate and select alternatives
- Plan for implementation
- Implement the solutions

Give examples of some problems and share ideas on how to generate the steps above to solve the
problem. Make it in groups each group to come and share their model with the class.
