INTRODUCTION TO THE
PROBLEM:
The problem which we selected for our
presentation is the solid waste management
of Peshawar. as most of us currently live in
Peshawar we in one way or another must
have faced this problem. If not much I think
everyone in this class must have seen at
least a garbage dump or a large filled and
spilled bin by a roadside, even if u live in a
clean and green area u may have seen it in
some other part of the city. Now when you
come across such things don’t you think that
why is this disgusting garbage spilled over
here? Why isn’t this cleaned and disposed of
properly? I am sure you all think this way. So
this presentation gives a possible solution to
the problem by comparing it with a similar
problem in some other part of the world.

PROBLEM BRIEFING:

The total population of Peshawar

city is 4.3 million. While on average
it produce 0.4-0.8 kg/capita/day
waste. If we take 0.5 kg/capita/day
average then it leads to 2208 tons
of waste generated per day. Where
as in interview with WSSP finance
they say that maximum of 1000
tons/day is collected. Up to 250
tons/ day lifted off by privates
companies like Blue Skies and
Scavenger and Junk dealers. While
the rest lay their 960 tons/day.

SOLUTION APPLIED TO SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT
PROBLEM IN PESHAWAR:
• Companies like WSSP(water METHOD OF SOLID WASTE

as shown in the figure. • Collection of solid waste from bins
• Private companies like Blue and it is transfer to dump yard.
Skies a composting company • Temporary storage sites are used
give services to a very limited to remove and transfer collected
household area. solid waste from residences
through small vehicles to large
• According to WSSP 315 transport vehicles.
waste bins were installed at
• Recovery of recyclables.
different sites of different
shape and sizes. • Solid waste disposal.

6
GAP ANALYSIS:
• The gap analysis chart
compares maximum
potential of trips with the
real number of trips from
the site of waste disposal to
its final destination.
• It is evident from the chart
that the real number of
trips are lagging very
behind the maximum
potential.

SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT OF INDORE CITY (INDIA):
A POSSIBLE SOLUTION TO THE SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT PROBLEM OF
PESHAWAR.
• The success of Indore in terms of solid waste management shows that it is doable
for us too because once the situation of Indore was also similar to that of Peshawar.

8
HOW INDORE CITY SOLVED ITS SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT
PROBLEM:

• Door To Door Collection

• Waste Generation & Segregation
• Waste Collection & Transportation
• Waste Processing
• Garbage Transfer Station
• Open Defecation City
• Creating Awareness: Information, Education And Communication (IEC)
• Triggering Activities And Monitoring
• Awareness Campaign
• Waste Processing And Final Disposal
• Biomethanation Plant For Wholesale Vegetable And Fruit Market
• Plastic Waste Collection Centre
• Mechanised Road Cleaning

9
TECHNIQUES UESD BY INDORE TO TURN WASTE INTO FUEL:

• Gasification
• Incineration
• Compositing
• Land fill
• Recycling
Due to the above useful techniques Around 20 tons of waste is gathered each day and
changed over into 750-800 kg of bio compressed natural gas (bio-CNG), said Mahindra
Waste to Energy Solutions Ltd.

10
RESULTS OF THE SOLUTION APPLIED BY INDORE’S
MUNICIPAL AUTHORITY
As a result of the solution Indore city achieved quite good levels of the following
indicators compared with the benchmark levels.

11
CONCLUSION:

The methods and techniques used in the solid waste management model
of Indore City proved really effective in the waste treatment. It was
definitely successful. Through the efficient techniques discussed in the
above slides they also managed to convert waste into fuel.
