A Social Enterprise in Waste Management

CAPACITY STATEMENT
Why Consult With Doko Recyclers?
Nepal needs effective long term and efficient waste management systems at both the municipal and
community levels. Doko Recyclers provides large-scale waste management services in both urban and rural
areas. We work with stakeholders including private, public and development sector organizations to create
waste management systems that are specific to our clients’ unique needs. As Nepal’s first waste management
enterprise, we aim to increase awareness of the importance of proper waste management while creating waste
management models that preserve and elevate culture and environment.

We also support companies that want to become sustainable by aiding in Corporate Social Responsibility
(CSR) opportunities, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes and recycling end-of-life
recyclable products. It is high time we do what we can to manage waste in Nepal, especially with
increasing consumption of goods and lack of proper waste management.

Our Approach for Rural and Mountain Waste Consultancy

Waste Audits and Assessment

Our assessments help us design a Waste Management System and identify
key waste management strategies using tools like waste audits, interviews,
market feasibility studies, and surveys.

Long Term Waste Managment Plan

Planning plays an imperative role in achieving sustainable waste management
as it provides an overview of all the waste generated and provides treatment
options for different categories of waste.

System Design and Monitoring

System Design entails discussing the ideal location, infrastructure and
systems for a Community Recycling Center (CRC), a collection center for
dry recyclables.

Community Recycling Center Design

A site assessment will be established (if needed) to build a CRC where we
provide the layout, requirements, and functionality of the CRC.

Waste Collection System Set-up

Systems for collection of different waste streams, parties responsible for
attending to collection, collection routes, and the end markets for all collected
items will be planned in detail.

Comprehensive Workshops and Training

Training will be provided for different stakeholders so they are better equipped
to manage waste. We also train individuals directly involved in the waste
management system to foster its smooth operation.

03
Project Based Partnerships
Doko Recyclers works with a wide range of stakeholders on long and short term project based partnerships to
strengthen waste management for different sectors and cities. Our project based partnership models allows you
to curate your own project around the topic of waste management and sustainability ranging from bin installation
to capacity building training and proper disposal of e-waste.

Our past project based partnerships have included:

Community and school recycling and waste management projects headed by development
agencies (INGOs and NGOs) or local governing bodies;

Curation of green events and waste management to promote sustainability and recycling as
standalone projects or CSR initiatives.

OUR PROJECT AREAS

Waste Management and Community Outreach at
Swayambhu World Heritage Site
Doko Recyclers worked with UNESCO, the Federation of Swayambhu
Management and Conservation, the Department of Archaeology, and Organic
Life to set up a complete waste management system in Swayambhu and make
the heritage site a true model in cleanliness and upkeep for the rest of the
country. We conducted 5 cleanup sessions with cleaners, vendors, nuns,
students, and administrative staff based in Swayambhu and helped set up 2
monkey-proof bins with a volume of 750 liters with compartments for recyclable
waste, organic waste, and landfill waste.

Green School Project

Together with Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), we
developed proper waste management systems in 7 different government
schools in the Kathmandu Valley. We have set up bins in all these schools and
will conduct awareness workshops, waste audits, and form eco-clubs to teach
students about sustainability practices. It is important to educate students about
recycling so they can start building a greener Nepal with us.

Cleanup Campaigns
We partnered with the Kageshwori Manohara Municipality and New Star Pole
Schools student group, Himalayan Heroes to conduct a cleanup
campaign for World Environment Day, 2019. The participating students were
taught to separate the recyclable waste collected from non-recyclable waste so
any recyclable waste collected during the event would be sent to be recycled by
Doko Recyclers. 27 schools and 3,000 students participated in the Cleanup
Campaign. At the end of the day, students collected 417 kilograms of recyclable
waste.

04
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
Corporate Social Responsibility activities are policies or acts within a company that allow it to better society and
make employees civic-minded. We allow companies and organizations to give back to the
community and further sustainability by providing opportunities to recycle at their premises, fund waste
management awareness workshops, or set up bins in public spaces. Here are some ways companies have
worked with us to protect the environment and instill a culture of recycling in Kathmandu and beyond.

Refresh and Recycle PET Collection Campaign

We worked with Coca Cola Nepal and Bottlers Nepal Limited to place PET Bottles
Collection Bins in Patan Durbar Square, Tribhuvan University, Patan Hospital,
Swayambhu, and Boudha where the public can place their used PET bottles. We
collect all the bottles that are placed in these bins to recycle them. The bins will be
handed over to the local governing bodies after two years for long term
sustainability and effective upkeep.

PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is a type of plastic that is

recyclable and is widely used to make bottles.

LOOKING FOR CSR ACTIVITIES?

Banks and financial institutions can install public bins to encourage communities to segregate waste at
source. The recyclable waste will be collected by Doko Recyclers which diverts waste away from the
landfills and into our factories.

ICT (Information, Communication, and Technology) companies can act as collection points for e-waste.
E-waste is hazardous if disposed of improperly. Doko can help manage e-waste either by dismantling
and recycling, or refurbishing and remarketing.

Online stores can create buy back and discount schemes for customers that collect a certain amount of
packaging material from the store. Doko will buy the collected recyclables and ensure it is recycled.

Supermarkets can place bins for customers to return recyclable items bought from the store in exchange
for vouchers. Customers can receive discounts through the vouchers and Doko will collect the recycla-
bles and provide ‘cash for trash’.

06
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a policy tool to enable manufacturing and distribution
companies to take responsibility for their end-of-life plastic or e-waste products as well as packaging material
to foster a circular economy and protect our planet. We want companies to realize the potential for their end of
life or discarded products to be recycled and recovered as resources.

Refresh and Recycle - PET Collection Campaign

We have been working with the Coca Cola Company in Nepal to collect
end-of-life PET bottles so they enter the recycling stream instead of the
landfill or worse, our rivers. So far, we have been able to collect more than
one tonne of PET bottles in a year!

Electronic Waste Voucher Scheme

We have partnered up with CG Digital to purchase end-of-life
electronic products and gadgets from their consumers, after which the
consumers get vouchers from CG. We then refurbish and resell the
electronic waste (e-waste), or dismantle them safely and recycle them.

Professional E-waste Managment

Syakar Philips Nepal has a voucher system set up with Doko
Recyclers wherein every customer who provides us with an e-waste
item receives a voucher providing a small discount on their
electronic products.

Him Electronics, the official distributor of Samsung Electronics,

recycles all their electronic waste with Doko Recyclers along with
perusing our data destruction services for used and discarded
e-waste items.

07

and eventually carbon footprint. Doko has conducted
over 200 awareness workshops reaching over 10,000
people since mid-2017 who now have a better
