Segregate Dumaguete: Empowering Communities for Sustainable Waste

Management

Rationale

The Segregate Dumaguete project is an initiative bearing the goal of addressing

the inadequate waste segregation in Dumaguete City through a grassroots approach. It
recognizes the urgent need for sustainable waste management practices and endeavors
to empower residents with the knowledge, tools, and support necessary to make a
tangible difference. By upholding inclusivity and enlightenment on the significance of
proper waste segregation, the project aspires to combat environmental degradation,
enhance public health, and foster a united community spirit.

Project Overview

Segregate Dumaguete aims to address the issue of poor waste segregation in

Dumaguete City by implementing community-driven waste management strategies. The
project will focus on fostering inclusive participation and raising awareness about the
importance of waste segregation for environmental sustainability.

Objectives
1. To educate and empower Dumaguete City residents to properly segregate their
garbage.
2. To establish sustainable waste management practices with strong community
participation.
3. To limit the amount of unsorted waste disposed of in landfills while also promoting
recycling and composting programs.
4. To give the Dumagueteños a feeling of responsibility in and accountability for their
neighborhood.

Key Components and Activities

1. Community Workshops and Training Sessions
• Conduct workshops and training sessions in various neighborhoods across
Dumaguete City to educate residents about the importance of waste
segregation.
• Provide practical demonstrations on how to segregate different types of
waste, including recyclables, organic waste, and non-recyclable materials.
• Collaborate with local environmental organizations, government agencies,
and community leaders to facilitate these sessions.

2. Establishment of Segregation Stations

• Set up segregation stations in key locations throughout Dumaguete City,
such as markets, schools, and barangay centers.
• Equip these stations with clearly labeled bins for different types of waste,
along with informational materials on proper waste segregation.
• Train volunteers from the community to manage and maintain these
segregation stations, ensuring their effectiveness and sustainability.

3. Awareness Campaigns
• Launch a comprehensive awareness campaign using various media
channels, including social media, radio, and community events.
• Develop engaging and informative materials, such as posters, flyers, and
videos, to promote the importance of waste segregation and encourage
behavior change.
• Organize community events, such as cleanup drives and eco-fairs, to
further raise awareness and foster a sense of collective responsibility
towards waste management.

4. Monitoring and Evaluation

• Establish a monitoring and evaluation system to track the progress of waste
segregation efforts in Dumaguete City.
• Regularly assess the effectiveness of community-driven initiatives and
identify areas for improvement.
• Solicit feedback from residents and stakeholders to ensure continuous
learning and adaptation of strategies.

Expected Outcomes
