INTRODUCTION
The 169 targets and 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that are presented in this
study convey the ambition and scope of this new world agenda. They work towards
advancing the millennium development goals and finish what has been left incomplete. They
aim to achieve gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls, as well as creating
awareness of everyone’s human rights. This essay begins with selecting three (3) of the 17
SDGs and describes which initiatives have been of use in selected community to ensure the
achievement of those objectives and moves on to briefly outline which professional
community development initiatives and ends off with listing some of the community
development efforts that have been carried out in our chosen community.

BODY
1.1) Quality Education (SDG 4)

• After-school tutoring programs: To help pupils with their academics, several groups in
Glenwood have set up after-school tutoring programs. These programs provide tutoring in
disciplines like math, science, and language arts to help pupils do better in class.

• Scholarships and bursaries: Plans have been made to offer community students scholarships
and bursaries. This financial assistance tries to ensure that academic advancement is not
hindered by finances by enabling students from low-income homes to access quality
education at the basic, secondary, and university levels.

• Mentorship initiatives: In Glenwood, mentorship initiatives have been put in place to help
students by connecting them with seasoned professionals and community people. Mentors
assist students by imparting their knowledge, abilities, and experience.

SDG 8: Good Jobs and Economic Growth

• Skills training programs: Glenwood has seen the implementation of skills training programs
to improve community members' employability. These programs provide vocational
education in fields such as computer skills, entrepreneurship, crafts, and trades. These
initiatives attempt to promote economic possibilities and enhance livelihoods by providing
persons with necessary skills.
• Small business assistance: Initiatives have been developed to aid and resources to
Glenwood's small companies. This offers workshops for business development, mentoring
programs, financial access, and networking possibilities. These projects attempt to boost
economic growth, job creation, and revenue generation in the community through aiding
small company owners and entrepreneurs.

Sustainable Cities and Communities1 (SDG 11)

• Glenwood has embraced community gardening as a strategy of promoting sustainable urban


agriculture and increasing food security. Members of the community work together to
cultivate communal green spaces, planting vegetables and herbs. These gardens not only
supply fresh produce but also foster community ownership and participation in sustainable
food production.

• Waste management programs: Glenwood has adopted a variety of waste management


programs to promote proper garbage disposal and recycling. These projects educate people on
trash segregation techniques, encourage recycling, and arrange frequent clean-up campaigns
to keep the town clean and the environmental impact of waste to a minimum.

• Public space enhancements: Glenwood has undertaken efforts to improve public places such
as parks, playgrounds, and recreational facilities. This involves creating more green spaces,
installing fitness equipment, upgrading seating areas, and assuring accessibility for all
members of the community. These enhancements are intended to create lively and welcoming
public places that encourage community interaction and physical well-being.

1.2) A Glenwood community development professional would use numerous principles of


practice to improve the success of community development programs. Here are some crucial
concepts:

a) Participatory Approach: Professionals in community development would prioritize


including community members in decision-making processes and actively seeking their
feedback. This method ensures that interventions are guided by the community members'
own needs, objectives, and viewpoints. It promotes initiative empowerment, ownership, and
sustainability.

b) Collaboration and Partnership: Community development experts would encourage
collaboration and partnership with a variety of stakeholders, including local government,
non-governmental organizations (NGOs), businesses, and community organizations. They
can increase the impact and durability of actions by fostering synergies and pooling
resources. Collaboration also ensures that interventions are consistent with broader
community development objectives and initiatives in Glenwood Durban.

c) Participation, for the projects to be successful, the community must participate in them.
The only way to establish a community initiative is to enlist the help of your neighbours.
Transparency requires the community to be honest about the challenges it is facing, and if
there is anything they know that could possibly help the community, they should do it. Every
community member, regardless of skin colour, race, or creed, must be included in communal
affairs. No member of the community may be excluded from any community activity.

d) Long-Term Sustainability2: Community development experts would prioritize long-term


sustainability in their efforts. This includes considering environmental, social, and economic
variables to ensure that interventions address current demands without jeopardizing future
generations' ability to meet their own. They may concentrate on fostering environmentally
friendly habits, economic possibilities, and social cohesiveness in order to build a resilient
and sustainable community.

e) Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD)3: This principle focuses on finding and


using the community's existing strengths, resources, and capacities. Professionals in
community development would engage with residents to identify and deploy their assets,
such as skills, expertise, local organizations, and networks. This method supports self-
sufficiency and encourages the community to discover creative solutions to its problems.

Community development professionals in the Glenwood community can improve the


effectiveness, sustainability, and positive impact of their interventions by implementing these
principles of practice, thereby supporting the community's well-being and development.
Moreover, several community development programs aimed at enhancing various areas of the
Glenwood neighbourhoods have taken place. Education, environmental sustainability, social

cohesion, and economic empowerment have all been the emphasis of these programs. Let's
look at few examples:

1.3) 1. Education initiatives: Several groups and individuals in Glenwood have established
educational initiatives to provide access to quality education. After-school tutoring programs,
mentorship programs, and scholarships for impoverished students are examples of these.
These projects attempt to boost academic performance while also providing possibilities for
children and young adults.

2. Environmental activities: Environmental measures to promote sustainability and


conservation have been implemented in Glenwood. These projects include community
gardens, tree planting campaigns, waste management programs, and recycling and
environmental education workshops. They want to make their community greener and
cleaner while also increasing awareness about sustainable practices.

3. Social cohesion activities: Community development efforts have arranged events and
activities that bring residents together in order to build a sense of unity and social cohesion.
Cultural festivals, sports tournaments, community clean-up days, and neighbourhood watch
programs are examples of these4. Such events promote resident engagement, break down
boundaries, and strengthen community bonds.

4. Economic empowerment: Several projects have been created in the Glenwood


neighbourhood to empower individuals and foster entrepreneurship. Skills training programs,
company development workshops, and financing assistance for small firms are among the
activities5. These programs seek to improve economic possibilities and minimize
unemployment by providing community people with skills and resources.

5. The Glenwood community launched a clean-up initiative in which neighbours banded


together and began cleaning the area6. Polluting was caused by overcrowding in the
neighbourhood due to a lack of spatial planning, which caused garbage to accumulate
considerably faster, resulting in polluting. Glenwood residents began illegally dumping trash
on the streets, parks, and public spaces. Fortunately, one of the community members initiated
a fantastic cleaning campaign by inviting neighbours to help clean up their neighbourhood.

The clean-up drive kept Glenwood from becoming a dumping ground and from losing its
value as a residential area that people want to buy.

CONCLUSION
In summary, this essay has discussed three of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, briefly
explained the principles of practice a community development professional will apply in our
chosen community to increase the success of community development interventions, and
finally made a list of some of the community development initiatives implemented in our
chosen community as well as explained some of the processes that occurred and described
some of the initiatives. It further demonstrates and emphasizes the sustainable development
goals' (SDGs') purpose of fostering communities that work to raise their social, economic,
and environmental standards of living by taking into account both the expected outcomes and
current results.
