Definition
• Nanoscience and nanotechnology are the study and
applications of extremely small things and can be used
across all other science fields such as cemistry, biology,
physics, material science and engineering.
• Nanotechnology may be able to create many new materials
and devices with a vast range of applications such as
medicine, electronics, biomaterials, and energy production.
• Nanotechnology refers to a field of applied science that deals
with structure devices 100nanometers or smaller in size.
• 1nm = 10-9m
3
What is nanomaterial
• Nanomaterials are chemical substances or materials
consisting of very small particles of different shapes and
sizes no larger than hundred nanometers, or about one
thousand times less than the thickness of a human hair
• Nanomaterials have extremely small size which having at
least one dimension 100nm.
• A single particle of smoke is in the order of 1000
nanometers
• It can be 0-D,1D, 2D, 3D.

Advantages
With Nanotechnology we can create unique
materials and products which are stronger, lighter,
cheaper, durable, precise.
Automatic pollution cleanup.
Computers become faster and smaller
Manufacturing at very low cost
6
Disadvantages
Nano particles can cause serious illness or damage
to human body. Carbon nanotubes could cause
infection of lungs
Nano pollution is created by toxic waste
7
Photocatalysis
photo = light
catalysis = using a catalyst

Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticle
Photocatalytic Activity
Organic Compounds photocatalyzed by TiO2 with UV light to produce H20 and CO2
Organic Compoundsdegraded/destroyed in the process through hydroxylation
10
Photocatalytic Process
Photocatalysts create a strong oxidation agent and electronic
holes to break down organic matter into carbon dioxide and
water when in the presence of photocatalysts such as light and
water
11
Uses of Photocatalytic
Nanoparticles
Nanoparticles are essential in industries such as water sanitation
and purification. They are also used in products from antimicrobial
agents, cosmetics, and sunscreens to semiconductor systems.

Future Research
Photocatalytic nanoparticles are currently being doped (an approach to modulate
the electronic and optical properties of nanoparticles) and manipulated to trigger
specific properties for nanoparticles in order to build an effective material.
