Around the world, pump is used for many purposes. For this study we are
focusing on pump used for agricultural purposes. In rural areas farmers are
facing problems of cut-off of electricity. The physical locations of some
villages are such that it becomes very difficult to supply electricity to those
areas or even if electricity is facilitated, the environmental or weather
conditions of those areas are so complex that the electricity providers have to
do so. However we can’t change the environmental conditions but can change
the technology. We can design the new technology. So the idea of the ‘pump
without use of electricity’ came from here which is named as ‘screw tube water
pump’. This pump can be design as per our requirement. During the study it is
found some drawbacks of this pump. The main drawback of this pump is, as it
is totally depend on flowing water, its use will be restricted according to season
that is it will be used in only monsoon season when flowing water is available.
To overcome this drawback we decided further change in present technology.
LITERATURE REVIEW :-
• The Archimedean screw is an ancient invention (287-212BC), and commonly used to raise water
from water source to irrigation
• Research on screw tube/turbine has been started in Europe around the year of 2000s. Originally it was
designed for pumping water from one location to another, the idea of modifying it for use as a turbine
has been seen in the UK since 2004.
• Rorres (2000) lays out an analytical method to optimize design an Archimedes screw geometry for
pumping applications. This problem is framed as maximizing the amount of water that can be lifted
with each turn of the Archimedes screw pumps.
• In 2015, there was an article about compilation of Archimedes screw in application as a pump and as a
tube (S. Waters, G.A. Aggidis). They said there is currently a lack of research on the topic due to
infancy of technology as a tube. Screw tube that was developed are visually similar to the inclined
pump and often treated the same during the design. However, there are some key differences. When it
comes to creating and optimizing a pump device, the key is to increase the amount of water moved
during each turn of device.
• J. Rohmer (2016) did research about modeling and experimental results of an Archimedes
screw tube. Their model based on what C. Rorres (2000) did for Archimedes screw pump
with some developments. Their research shows upstream level, mechanical efficiency and
mechanical torque, as a function of the rotational speed and flow rate. Comparison between
numerical and experimental data show the same trend and tend to slightly different.
• Guilem Delinger (2016) also did experimental research of Archimedes screw tube. They
derived some formulas based on C. Rorres (2000). Compared to other generation
technologies, screw tube has greatest potential at low head site and unlike conventional
reaction and impulse turbines, screw tube has the potential for maintaining high efficiency
even as the head approaches zero.

4) SCREW TURBINE :-
1) SCREW TURBINE :-
The screw turbine is a water turbine which uses the principle of the Archimedean screw to convert
the potential energy of water on an upstream level into work. It may be compared to the water wheel.

Dia of shaft = 15mm
Material = MS ( Mild Steel )
Bending moment=force X perpendicular distance =5 X 9.81 X 450
Bending moment =22072.5Nmm
for diameter 15mm,
I= π/64 X d^4 = π/64 X 15^4
I= 2483.78 mm4
M/I = σb/Y

σb = 8.86 X 7.5
σb =66.64 N/mm²
3) WORM GEAR :-
A worm drive is a gear arrangement in which a worm (which is a gear in the form of a screw) meshes with a
worm gear (which is similar in appearance to a spur gear). The two elements are also called the worm screw
and worm wheel.
A Generator is a device that converts motive power (mechanical energy) into electrical power
for use in an external circuit. Sources of mechanical energy include steam turbines, gas turbines, water turbines,
internal combustion engines and even hand cranks.
A Reciprocating pump is a class of positive-displacement pumps which includes the piston pump,
plunger pump and diaphragm pump. When well maintained, reciprocating pumps will last for years or even
decades; however, left untouched, they can undergo rigorous wear and tear. It is often used where a relatively
small quantity of liquid is to be handled and where delivery pressure is quite large. In reciprocating pumps,
the chamber in which the liquid is trapped, is a stationary cylinder that contains the piston or plunger.
