REFLECTION
- abrupt change in the direc-
tion of propagation of a
wave that strikes the bound-
ary between different medi-
ums.
light

- electromagnetic radiation
that can be detected by the
human eye.
REFLECTION of light
Reflection of light (and other forms of
electromagnetic radiation) occurs
when the waves encounter a surface
or other boundary that does not ab-
sorb the energy of the radiation and
bounces the waves away from the sur-
face.
Law of REFLECTION
“When light ray strikes off a surface,
the angle of incidence is equal to the
angle of reflection.”

angle of incidence (i)=angle of reflection

i= r
Law of REFLECTION
Incident ray
• Light ray approaching
the surface, strikes
the mirror, it is re-
flected.
reflection ray
• Light ray that leaves
the mirror.
Normal line
• The line that divides
the incident and re-
flected ray.
Angle of incidence
• The angle between
the incident ray and
normal line.
Angle of reflection
• The angle between
the reflected ray and
normal line.
Types of REFLECTION
• Specular
• Diffuse
Specular reflection
• Parallel incident rays
bounce off the surface
as parallel reflected
rays following the Law
of Reflection.
Diffuse reflection
• Still following the Law
of Reflection, the paral-
lel incident rays are re-
flected rays to different
directions.
DIFFUSION
• The dispersal of reflected
light
• Happens when a smooth re-
flecting surface that pro-
duce specular reflec-
tion of red rays may produce
diffuse reflection when inci-
dent upon by violet rays.
BENEFITS OF DIFFUSED LIGHT
ABSORPTION

• The transfer of energy carried by the light

waves to the particles of the matter.
SCATTERING

• The reflection of light by particles

LAWS OF REFLECTION

• The angle of incidence is equal to

the angle of reflection
• The incident ray, the normal to the
mirror at the point of incidence, and
the reflected ray all lie in the same
plane
