02 Getting to know plasma

Topic:
03 The three states of matter
Matter usually exists in one
of three states or phases:
solid, liquid, or gas. The
chair you are sitting on is a
solid, the water you drink
is liquid, and the air you
breathe is a gas.
solid

● They are relatively rigid with definite

volume and shape. In a solid, the atoms and
molecules are attached to each other. They
vibrate in place but don’t move around.
Liquid

● It has definite volume but able to change

shape by flowing. In a liquid, the atoms and
molecules are loosely bonded. They move
around but stay close together.
Gas

● It has no definite volume or shape. The

atoms and molecules move freely and
spread apart from one another.
Wait…
Did you
know that
there is a
fourth state
of matter?
Plasma

● It’s similar to a gas the electrons are free in a

cloud rather than attached to individual
atoms. This means that a plasma has very
different properties from those of an
ordinary gas. Plasmas occur naturally in
flames, lightning and auroras.
Let’s watch the following
video and answer the que
stions
: 1. What are the fundamental properties of
matter?
2. How is liquid’s volume and mass?
3. What are the types of heating and cooling
matter?
4. Give an example of evaporation.
