EATING:
• Italians wait for their host to sit and wait for them to indicate when it’s time to eat.

• Resting elbows on the table is considered as poor manners.

• It is improper to put one’s hands on one’s lap or to stretch hands while at the table.

• Removing your shoes in front of others is considered impolite.


GIFTING
• Gifts are opened in front of the giver.

• Italians wrap gifts in decorative and beautiful wrapping. Avoid wrapping a gift in black
or purple.

• Avoid giving knives and scissors as gifts.

• If giving flowers, be aware that chrysanthemums symbolize death. Yellow flowers


indicate jealousy while red flowers indicate love, passion, secrecy.

• Remove the sticker price when giving gifts.


VISITING/INVITATIONS

● Don’t take off your shoes in front of others.

● Elders enter the room first.

● Dinner guests often bring wine, chocolates, or flowers.

● Make sure you complement the cleanliness and decor of


someone’s home.
