4-STEP PROCESS IN FINDING
THE AREAS UNDER THE
NORMAL CURVE
1. Express the given z-value into 3-digit form.
2. Using the z-table, find the first two-digits on the left
column
3. Match the third digit with the appropriate column on the
right.
4. Read the area at the intersection of the row and column.
WHAT DOES THE ENTRIES OF
THE Z-TABLE TELL YOU?
The table provides the area between z=0 and any
value of z.
The row entries are the z-values. The column
headings are z, .00, .01, .02, .03and so on to .09.
the columns indicate the hundredth place of a z-
value.
THE FORMULA FOR
CALCULATING Z
(z-score for population data)

(z-score for sample data)

Given the mean µ = 50 and the standard deviation, σ = 4 of a population of
reading scores. Find the z – value that corresponds to a score X = 58.

STEPS SOLUTION
1. Use the computing formula for finding z-scores
of the population data.
2. Check the given values. Since this are  µ=50, σ=4 and
population values, the z-score locates X with in a X = 58
population.
3. Substitute the given values in the computing
formula.
4. Compute the z-value.
INTERPRETATION:
Thus, the z-value that corresponds to
the raw score 58 is 2 in a population.
We can say that with respect to the
mean, the score 58 is above average.
EXAMPLE 2
A random variable X has a mean of 6 and a standard
deviation of 2. Find the corresponding z-score for x = 11.

Solution:
Step 1: Write the formula.

Step 2: Substitute the given values. Step 4: Write the

corresponding z-
Step 3: Perform the operations. score.
ACTIVITY
Complete the table by converting the given values into z-scores.
Then find the corresponding area using the z-table.
