The Problem
America Can't Read
About 130 million people (54% of US adults) lack proficiency in literacy. They
read below the equivalent of a sixth-grade level
• Illiteracy is a major factor in whether young adults graduate from high school. One out of six young adults (1.2 million)
drop out of high school every year due to literacy problems

• A new study finds that low levels of adult literacy could be costing the U.S. as much as $2.2 trillion a year
