JOB TITLE: Communications Consultant

access to children or young people

ROLE PURPOSE:
This role is responsible for developing and driving effective external communications strategies that
increases brand awareness and engagement with Save the Children International’s audiences. This is a
temporary post to support the global comms team with communications for our global campaign.

The post holder will work collaboratively with media, digital and content colleagues in Save the Children
Members and Country Offices to develop integrated communications.

SCOPE OF ROLE:

Reports to: Head of Strategic Communications

Staff reporting to this post: none

Budget Responsibilities: no direct responsibility

Role Dimensions: this is a highly demanding and fast-moving role that requires strong skills in
communications strategy, written and spoken communication and web/social media. The role will
require an ability to work in a networked structure across functional and geographical boundaries.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

1. Support with communications strategy and delivery for the global #SaveOurEducation and
#ProtectAGeneration campaigns. To include:
 providing ongoing strategic comms advice to the campaign and advocacy team
 overseeing the development of digital products, reports and other content (working with the
global content team)
 drafting copy for web and social (working with the global comms coordinator)
 supporting with comms for high level events e.g. United Nations General Assembly
 regularly evaluate the comms (using our template) and report back to the campaign team

2. Oversee the production of a 25-page global policy report and digital products. To include:
 managing editing and design (using a freelance editor and designer)
 creating a comms plan for launch
 working with the content team to produce supporting content

3. Provide ad-hoc support to the global comms team. To include:


 commissioning and editing blogs for the global site
 drafting web copy and social posts on occasion
 supporting country offices with strategic comms advice and comms products
 support with CEO comms (e.g. Twitter posts and op-eds)
 support with day-to-day global channel management

QUALIFICATIONS
Educated in a relevant field (e.g. Public Relations, Communications; International Development;
Politics).

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS


 Excellent written and verbal communication skills to motivate, influence and negotiate both
internally and externally
 Proven success in developing and implementing complex communications projects – ideally for
campaigns and/or advocacy/policy work.
 Cultural sensitivity, with highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including
influencing and negotiation.
 Experience in developing and managing communications content and tools and making best use
of user-created content. 
 Excellent written communication skills in English, with a proven ability to distil large amounts
of information for diverse audiences; skills in other languages would be an advantage
 Experience managing websites and social media channels is desirable.
 Excellent planning and organisational skills, with an ability to meet deadlines and manage
multiple demands and competing priorities, while maintaining high quality standards
 An ability to work as part of a team within a networked structure, and to maintain good working
relationships with colleagues across functional and geographical boundaries
 Some experience with Google Analytics and social media analytics is desirable but not essential.
 An ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to adapt work plans flexibly depending on
external opportunities
