Social Work Practice

Solving Problem Approach

Methods to Solve Social Problems
INTRODUCTION

– Problem solving is the ultimate goal in any help process.

– But the goal towards problem solving is not easy as it involves

certain levels and the use of certain skills.

PROBLEMS AND SOLUTION
– The word "problem" refers to a situation or experience that may affect
an individual's imbalance in emotional, mental, action, and physical
aspects (Compton, Gallaway & Cournoyer, 2005).
– The presence of the problem can also directly push or motivate an
individual to move forward, especially from aspects of thinking and
action that can provide solutions to the problems encountered.
– Individual efforts to solve the problems encountered are what can be
formulated as an individual action through certain processes towards
problem solving.

STARTING LEVEL
(Self Preparation)
 The willingness of a mentor to understand their roles and responsibilities of
helping the client.

 Self preparations should be focused on mental, emotional and action aspects.

and roles as aid givers.
STARTING LEVEL
(Rapport Relationship)
 Giving the mentor an opportunity to get to know the client and their client's problem
more deeply.
 Providing opportunities for clients to better understand the role of mentors.
 Clients have the opportunity to assess the mentor's personality more deeply especially if
the mentor can be trusted, in particular, his ability to stick to confidentiality issues.
 Providing awareness to both parties, clients and mentors of collaborative effort to ensure
the effectiveness of the problem solving process.
 Rapport relationship can help to provide a comfortable environment to clients to share
their problems.
MIDDLE LEVEL
(Situation Determination)
 Determine the exact situation of the client's actual problems, the establishment of action plans or interventions
that can be used for the purpose of solving the problem, and the stage of implementation of the action plan
that has been prepared.
 A process in which the mentor will try to understand the client's problem, interpret and further define the
client's main problem or situation.
 Mentors will gather information or data relevant to client issues more actively through interviews and
observations conducted with clients.
MIDDLE LEVEL
(Situation Determination)
Clarity of client issues needs to be determined in this level such as
– understanding the real problem;
– How much it disturbs clients (feelings and thoughts of clients);
– The context of seriousness of the problem in the client's everyday life;
– The cause of the problem;
– Any action taken and the result of such action;
– Features and aspects of the development of client systems and other systems where the client works;
– Understand the social systems and environmental systems that impact the problem;
– And finally the expected results of the client from the help process.
MIDDLE LEVEL
(Implementation Plan)
 Setting goals or objectives that you want to achieve and create appropriate
action plans which is relevant to the problems.
 Allows both clients and mentors to see what they are trying to accomplish or
solve.
 Monitor the client's development (monitoring) and see how far the action
plan or intervention process corresponds with the solution of the client's
problem.
 Should focus to the needs, goals and changes that the client wishes to
achieve. Mentor only serves as a facilitator to help the clients to think of
solutions to their problems.
MIDDLE LEVEL
(Implementation Plan) cont.
 Mentors should always respect clients who have the right to determine their own
course of action or changes, always show acceptance of clients, help clients to help
themselves, share information and knowledge with clients, stick to the principle of
confidentiality and show constant interest in helping.
 As a result of the arranged action plan, the client will be encouraged to implement the
action.
 In this implementation level, clients with mentor assistance will implement the action
plan.
 Concentration of action will be given to the agreed action plan in the previous stage of
determination of the situation.
TERMINATION LEVEL
(Evaluation Plan)
 Mentors reassess the action plan or intervention that clients have been through.
 The extent to which the client succeeds through the intervention provided, the strengths and
limitations of the intervention to the resolution of the problem, changes experienced by the
client.
 How far to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of the assistance services provided by the
mentor.
 It is important that it will determine whether the help process on the client should be
continued or not.
 Assisting mentors to assess the level of dependence of the client on the established help
relationship and the problems encountered.
TERMINATION LEVEL
(Terminate)
 An effective assessment of the mentor will be able to determine the
effectiveness of the help process that has been provided to the client.
 If there is a change in the client's or client's ability to work better after
receiving help then termination can be done.
 With the termination process, clients' reliance on mentors will be
discontinued.
 However, mentors need to be skilled in the process of termination. Client may
not be able to accept this termination process as well as seeing the termination
of the service as a sense of rejection or abandonment.
