Good news for coffee fans — a new study has found that drinking two or three cups per day could
help you live longer and reduce the risk of heart disease.
Researchers in Australia said this was true for ground, instant and decaffeinated coffee.
Using information from the UK's Biobank database, the researchers looked at long-term data from
almost 450,000 adults between the ages of 40 and 69. When the study began, none had any heart
problems.
Participants were asked about the amount — and type — of coffee they drank. Then they were put
into six groups based on how much they drank, going from none to five or more cups a day.
The researchers found that those who drank any type of coffee had a reduced risk of death from any
cause compared with those who didn't drink coffee at all.
Drinking two to three cups was associated with the greatest risk reduction.
It was the same for heart disease — with ground coffee doing the best job.
They also found that ground and instant coffee — but not decaffeinated — reduced the risk of an
irregular heartbeat.
Decaffeinated coffee had other positive effects. One of the study's authors, Peter Kistler, said that
although caffeine is the best-known component, regular coffee has more than 100 other components,
and they could be the ones that have an impact on our health.
