Introduction :
Welding –
Welding is a process of joining similar
metals by application of heat with or without
application of pressure and addition of filler
material.
Advantages of Electric Welding -

1. It requires less time for welding .

2. Control of current or welding time is more
accurate.
3. More homogeneous and uniform weld is obtained.
4. Properties of weld and joining material are same.
5. Provides more cleanliness.

 Mainly Electric welding are classified as :
1. Plastic Welding –
In plastic welding, the piece of
metal to be joined are heated to a plastic state
and then forced together to the external
pressure.
2. Fusion Welding –
In the fusion welding, the material at
the joint is heated to a molten state and allowed
3. Electric
to solidify.Resistance Welding.
4. Electric Arc Welding .
5. Electric Beam Welding.
Electric Resistance Welding -
In resistance welding two material
which are to be welded are joined together and electric
supply is given to the material. Current flows through
the junction of these material. Heat is generated at the
junction point by the resistance offered to the flow of
current at the junction of two metals and a weld is
obtained.
Types of Electric Resistance Welding –

• Spot Welding.
• Projection Welding.
• Seam Welding.
• Butt Welding.
a) Upset Butt Welding b) Flash Butt Welding.
• Percussion Welding.
Spot Welding -
• The above fig shows the construction of spot
welding.

• In spot welding the pieces which has to be joined

are placed together by mechanical pressure which is
exerted by the electrodes, then supply is switched ON
for a particular period.
• Passage of current generates the heat at there
junction i.e. between electrode and work pieces and
one between two pieces.
Spot Welding Machine –
Spot Welding machine is used to obtained
good joints. By using welding machine the welding
operation becomes independent of the operator.
Once the welding current, pressure, and
timing is set to the machine, it executes all the
operations automatically and correctly.
Seam welding -
In seam welding the pieces which is to be welded
is placed between two wheels which apply sufficient
mechanical pressure and also carry sufficient current for
producing continuous weld.

Applications of
seam beam are :
1. Welding pipes.
2. Conduits.
3. Transformers.
4. Containers.
5. Air crafts.
Advantages of Electric Resistance Welding -
1. In electric resistance welding there is no
need to use any flux or filler metal to join
the pieces.
2. Electric Resistance welding is a quick and
easy process
Disadvantages of Electric Resistance Welding -

1. The size and shape of electrodes will

determine the size and strength of welding.
2. The joint forms only at the spot where the
electrodes are in contact with the metal.
Questions :-
