At the end of this lesson,
you are expected to:
1. Explain the basics of writing an
academic research title.

2. Appraise the significance of having a

good research title.

3. Demonstrate mastery of narrowing

down a broad topic and of writing an
academic research title.
CONCEPT MAPPING

The class will be divided into 2.

Each group should brainstorm and
come up with words/terms that are
related to the assigned concept.

WRITING A
RESEARCH TITLE

TEACHER AL
Writing a Research Title

A research title, or research project, is a product of real

world observations, dilemmas, wide reading, selective
viewing (television programs, films, documentaries,
videos, etc.) meaningful interactions with significant
others, and deep reflection.

The title of the research is the research problem or

inquiry in capsule form. It must clearly reflect the topic
of investigation. And it must be ORIGINAL,
CLEAR, CONCISE or SPECIFIC.
Writing a Research Title

The title is without

doubt the part of a
paper that is read the
most, and it is
usually read first.
Writing a Research Title

The title summarizes the main idea or

ideas of your study. A good title
contains the fewest possible words
that adequately describe the contents
and/or purpose of your research paper.
Guidelines in Choosing a Research

1. Interest in the subject matter

Topic
2. Availability of information
3. Timeliness and relevance of the
topic
4. Limitations on the subject
5. Personal resources
TO BE
AVOIDED

CONTROVERSIAL TOPICS HARD-TO-INVESTIGATE TOO NARROW SUBJECTS

SUBJECTS

HIGHLY TECHNICAL
TOO BROAD SUBJECTS VAGUE SUBJECTS
SUBJECTS
CONTROVERSIAL TOPICS

These are topics that depend greatly on the

writer’s opinion, which may tend to be biased
or prejudicial. Facts cannot support topics like
these.

For Example:
• Black Lives Matter
• Abortion
• Atheism /Religion
HIGHLY TECHNICAL SUBJECTS

For a beginner, researching on topics that

require an advanced study, technical
knowledge, & vast experience is a very difficult
task.

For Example:
• Effects of Pharmaceutical Drugs
• Making of Android Phones
HARD-TO-INVESTIGATE SUBJECTS

A subject is hard to investigate if there are no

available reading materials about it and if such
materials are not-up-to date.
TOO BROAD SUBJECTS

Topics that are too broad will prevent you from

giving a concentrated or an in-depth analysis of
the subject matter of the paper.

For example:
• Education
• Sports
• Film
TOO NARROW SUBJECTS

These subjects are so limited or specific that an

extensive or thorough searching or reading for
information about these is necessary.
VAGUE SUBJECTS

Choosing topics like these will prevent you

from having a clear focus on your paper. For
instance, title beginning with indefinite
adjectives such as several, some, many, etc., as
in “Some Remarkable Traits of a Filipino” are
vague enough to decrease the readers’ interests
and curiosity.
TECHNIQUES FOR NARROWING A
TOPIC INTO A RESEARCH QUESTION

1. Examine the literature

2. Talk over ideas with others
3. Apply to a specific context
4. Define the aim or desired
outcome of the study

The initial aim of a title is to

capture the reader’s attention and
to draw his/her attention to the
research problem being
investigated.

WORKING TITLE vs FINAL
TITLE
The final title you submit to your teacher is created
after the research is complete so that the title
accurately captures what was done. The working
title, on the other hand, should be developed early
in the research process because it can help anchor
the focus of the study in much the same way the
