WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WITNESSED THESE SITUATIONS?
THE LARGEST MARITIME LOSS IN EUROPE AFTER THE SECOND
WORLD WAR

The ferry "Estonia" - which made the route between Stockholm

and Tallinn - sank in the vicinity of the Finnish island of Utoe on
September 28, 1994 with 989 passengers on board, mostly
Swedish and Estonian nationals, of which only 137 survived.
Sweden, which refused to allow the ship to be refloated (it is 85
meters from the surface), prohibited any type of exploration of
the ship.
Stockholm refused the request of many relatives to send
divers or a mini-submarine to take pictures and made
approaching the ship a crime. The Swedish Government came
to study the possibility of covering the ship with a layer of
cement but gave up on the idea. Many relatives and survivors
accuse successive executives of hiding something. Among the
different theories, victims assure that the Government hid
illegal transport of weapons or even radioactive material.
Before the ship sank, 97 people jumped into the sea but
also died, drowning or from hypothermia. Among all the
deceased there were Swedes (501) and Estonians (285).

The Swedish newspaper "Aftonbladet" claims to have seen

the images and that these would point to other causes of the
sinking than those considered so far; the official version after
the report prepared in 1997 is that the sinking was due to the
accidental opening of one of the access gates of the
vehicles.
