HEALTH
Hurt, ache, pain, sore (differences)
In Spanish we say:"Me duele la cabeza, el pie, una pierna, la mano, etc”. But in
English there are at least four different expressions to say the same thing:
hurt, pain, ache and sore.
Examples:
- My elbow hurts. (Me duele el codo). Note: Notice how "my elbow" is
personalized and “the elbow" is not said.
- - Her finger hurts. Le duele el dedo (a ella).
- Where does it hurt? ¿Dónde te duele? Note: I can also say "Where does it
ache?, although I would say that it is more common to say "Where does it
hurt?“
- - It really hurts. Me duele de verdad.
Hurt: [hert] es un verbo. Sirve para todo, sin embargo, las
otras palabras no. Además, siempre se conjuga igual,
presente, pasado y participio.
Además "hurt”puede usarse en sentido figurado.
- “He hurt me” (El me hizo daño) Puede ser porque me golpeó
o porque me dijo algo hiriente. Es común usar "hurt” hablar
de "sentimientos heridos" en una relación afectiva.
Example:
-Headache [hedeik]: dolor de cabeza.
-Backache [bakeik]: dolor de espalda.
-Heartache[harteik]: Dolor de corazón. It can also be the pain that is
produced by a sentimental break.
Sometimes, "ache" can be used as a synonym for "hurt" and "pain".
Example:
Sore: [sor] It is irritation. Suele aparecer con garganta, pero hay más
posibilidades.
Example:
- I have a sore throat. (Tengo la garganta irritada).
• Hurt: [hert] It is the most generic verb of all and is used to express internal,
external and figurative pain. Ex. My foot hurts. (Me duele el pie).
• Ache:[eik] It is a constant pain and less severe than “hurt". It can mean
ailment . Frequently "ache" appears attached to a noun. Ex . I have a
headache. (Tengo dolor de cabeza).
• Pain: [pein] It is a noun, not a verb. The pain . I have a pain in my tooth o
tooth pain. (Tengo dolor de muelas).
• Sore: [sor] It means "irritation". Ex. I have a sore throat. (Tengo la garganta
irritada).
