The ultimatum game is a game that has become a popular tool in experimental economics.
It was first described by Werner Güth, Rolf Schmittberg and Bernd Schwarze.

A player, called the Bidder, is proposed to share a certain amount of money (generally $100)
with another Responder player, as it suits him, making a single and definitive proposal. The
Responder, for its part, may or may not accept said proposal. In case of not accepting,
neither player would win anything. On the contrary, if he accepts, the distribution proceeds
according to the proposal made by the Bidder.

The ultimatum game is used as evidence against the theories of homo economicus since it
shows that elections based on criteria of justice and equity take precedence over those of
benefit. In this sense, we can say that homo economicus only bases his utility on material
payments, but in this way we can demonstrate that in reality there are other things that
matter to the individual.

The dictator game is a popular experimental instrument in
social psychology and economics, a derivative of the ultimatum game.

The term "game" is a misnomer because it captures a decision by a

single player: to send money to another or not. Thus, the dictator has
the most power and holds the preferred position in this “game.”
Although the “dictator” has the most power and presents a take it or
leave it offer, the game has mixed results based on different
behavioral attributes.

The results – where most "dictators" choose to send money –

evidence the role of fairness and norms in economic behavior, and
undermine the assumption of narrow self-interest when given the
opportunity to maximize one's own profits.
Discuss…Read the instructions above for The Sharing Experiment, two games
that test people´s behavior. What do you think the games show people?

Imagine you are playing the games. Write an amount from 0$- 100$.

1.- THE ULTIMATUM GAME:

I would keep ______$ and offer my partner ____$. The lowest I
would accept from my partner is ___$.
2.- THE DICTATOR GAME:
I would keep ____$ and offer my partner ____$.

Discuss this questions:

1.- What did two games show about your personality?
2.- Do you think you would behave differently in a real- life situation than you did in the game?
I´ll see you in
the next class….
