Propaganda
 a set of messages intended to
influence opinions of the masses
 a mode of communication used to
manipulate or influence the opinion of
groups to support a particular cause or
belief.
Using persuasive words may be of
great help in persuading other people
to do something for us. So, it is very
vital for us to learn what these words
are.
The following are forms and
expressions of persuasive language that
you can use both in speaking and
writing:
✘Emotive words
- are used to arouse emotion. They can help
influence decisions and change their opinions.
Emotive words have immediate connotations-
happiness, joy, guilt, sadness, and fear.
✘Use of personal pronouns
- “we”, “you”, and “us” create a connection
between writers and readers. Personal pronouns
can make the readers feel personally involved
with the topic being discussed.
✘Exaggeration
- makes something seem much better or much
worse than it is – that is to create a false
impression of the subject.
✘Repetition
- is saying the same word or phrase more than
once for emphasis. Repetition is used to make
sure a reader remembers key ideas.
✘The use of imperatives gives commands or
instructions to encourage the audience or readers to
do something quickly. They are also used to make
the audience or readers feel as if they have no other
choice in forming their opinions.
✘Rhetorical questions
- are questions that do not require or expect
an answer. They can be used to make the
reader think about a point being made in the
question.
- are asked to give effect or to put emphasis
without the need for a real answer.
✘The use of literary devices such as similes,
rhyme, alliteration, assonance, and other literary
devices to build a clearer image or picture for the
reader; such words or phrases make ideas
memorable.
✘Generalizations
- are broad sweeping statements that sound
true at the time and are not immediately
questioned for accuracy.
✘Play on the reader’s sympathy makes
the audience or readers feel sorry for
someone or something.
✘Clusters of three is using two or more
phrases in describing words to emphasize a
point or an idea.
Persuading someone is not easy.
We must exert effort and time in
convincing them to buy or do
something that we like. We
carefully think of words which we
might use to help us in persuading
others.
