GRAPHING

LINEAR
EQUATIONS
Hey!
What does a linear equation
looks like when you graph it?
(Clue: It’s on its name.)
Graphing linear equations can be done using any
of the four methods:

 Using two points

 Using x- and y-intercepts
 Using the slope and the y-intercept
 Using the slope and a point
The key question is: how many points do we need to
make a line?

USING TWO
One method of graphing a linear equation is by using
two points. You learned that two points determine a line.

POINTS
Since the graph of a linear equation is a line, then two
points are enough to graph a linear equation.
Mecha
nics
1. Graph each linear equation that passes through the given pair of
points. Match it to the zombie that it “kills”.
2. To kill a zombie the line must run through any part of its body.
3. Each line should only kill one zombie. If you kill more than one,
you are not precise enough.

Secondly, the linear equation can be graphed by using x-
intercept and y-intercept, a and b respectively. The x and y-

INTERCEPTS
intercepts of the line are also two points that lie on the axes of
the Cartesian plane and are enough to graph a linear equation.
Mecha
nics
1. Graph each linear equation whose x-intercept and y-intercept (a
and b) are given on the right. Match it to the zombie that it
“kills”.
2. To kill a zombie the line must run through any part of its body.
3. Each line should only kill one zombie. If you kill more than one,
you are not precise enough.

The third method is by using the slope and the y-
intercept. This can be done by identifying the slope
Y-INTERCEPT
and the y-intercept of the linear equation.
Mecha
nics
1. Graph each linear equation given its slope m and y-intercept.
Match it to the zombie that it “kills”.

you are not precise enough.

is by using the slope and a point. This can be

finding the other point using the slope.
