Subsets of A
Set
A subset is a set of elements
that are also in another set and
is denoted by for proper subset
and if the subset is the set
itself.
If every member of set A is also a
member of set B, then A is said to be
a subset of B,
written A B (also pronounced A is
contained in B or A is a subset of B).
Consider the following sets:
A = {Grade 7- Sampaguita students}
B = {female students from Grade 7 -
Sampaguita}
C= {tall students}
In these sets, we may conclude that set
B is a subset of A since all the
elements of set B also belongs to set A.
In symbols: B A, which is read as “B
is a subset of A”
On the other hand, set C cannot be
considered as a subset of set A nor set B
since the set of tall students is not well-
defined.

Therefore C A, which is read

as “C is not a subset of A”
A set must be well-defined so
that there were no ambiguities
about whether
or not an object belongs to the
set.
NOTE: is a symbol for
therefore.
| is a symbol for such that
Determine the number of subsets in a set:
1. J = {sun, moon, stars, meteors}
Subsets: {}, {sun}, {moon}, {stars}, {meteors},
{sun, moon}, {sun, stars}, {sun, meteors},
{moon, stars}, {moon, meteors},
{star, meteors}, {sun, moon, stars},
{sun, moon, meteors}, {sun, stars, meteors},
{moon, stars, meteors},
{sun, moon, stars, meteors}
Set J has 16 subsets.
2. C = {Earth, Venus, Mars}

Subsets: {}, {Earth}, {Venus}, {Mars}, {Earth, Venus},

{Earth, Mars},
{Venus, Mars}, {Earth, Venus, Mars}

Set C has 8 subsets.

 Any set has at least two (2) subsets, the empty set
and the set itself.

 In finding the number of subsets, we may use the

formula S = . (e.g. if the set has 4 elements, then 2 x
2 x 2 x 2 = 16, it means there are 16 subsets)
Other Examples:
1. Q =
Set Q has 16 subsets.
2. R =
Set Q has 64 subsets.
3. C =
Set Q has 8 subsets.
4. F =
Set Q has 5 subsets.
Operations on
Sets
1. Union of Sets
- is the set containing the
combined elements of two or
more
sets and is denoted by symbol.
Example:
Find the union of A = {1, 2, 3}
and B = {3, 4, 5}

Answer: A B = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
(AB, can be read as A union B)
Example:
Find the union of the following sets.
1. V = and W =
2. A = and B =
3. X =
Y=
4. S =
D=
5. C = and D =
2) Intersection of Sets
- is a set that has common
element and is denoted by ∩
symbol.
Example:
Find the intersection of

C = {2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20}

and D = {3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24}

Answer: C ∩ D = {6, 12, 18}

If two sets had at least one common
element, then the sets are joint sets.
However, if two sets do not have a
common element then the sets are
called disjoint sets.
Example:
Find the intersection of the following sets.
1. V = and W =
2. A = and B =
3. X =
Y=
4. S =
D=
5. C = and D =
Additional examples.
Find the union and intersection of the given sets.
1. W = {rose, sampaguita, dahlia, daisy}
X = {oregano, rose, aloe vera}
Answer:
W X = {rose, sampaguita, dahlia,
daisy, oregano, aloe vera}
W X = {rose}
2. Y = {mango, avocado, coconut,
guyabano}
Z = {guyabano, cotton, rubber, coconut}
Answer:
Y Z = {mango, avocado, coconut,
rubber, cotton}
Y Z = {coconut, guyabano}
Determine the number of subsets of each set.
1.) S = { male, female }
2.) C = { black, white}
3.) M = { gold, silver, bronze }
4.) D = { north, east, west, south }
5.) V = { a, e, i, o, u }
Given the sets below, determine the elements of the sets that follow.
Given: A = { s, m, i, l, e }
B = { g, l, a, d }
C = { d, r, e, a, m }

1. A B =
2. B C =
3. A C =
4. C ∩ B =
5. A ∩ C =
6. A ∩ B =
