subtraction within 10 using objects, fingers, mental
images, drawing, acting out situations, verbal
explanations, expressions, and equations.
 K.ATO.2 Solve real-world/story problems using

differences within 10.
 K.ATO.5 Add and subtract fluently within 5
Objectives

 Students show knowledge when adding up to 10

 Studentswill display an understanding to adding
and subtracting
 Studentswill be able to add and subtract objects
with real-life problems
Addition
How to add

 First count the number of objects

 EX: There are 5 apples

 Next you want to add two apples

 Count 2 numbers after the number 5
 Ex: 5…6….7
 The new total number of apples is 7
Subtracting

 When subtracting you count backwards

 Say you start with 3 apples
 But you eat 1 apple
 Count backwards by 1 before 3 comes 2
 The new total number of apples is 2

 To know when to use addition and subtraction there are signs

 The addition sign is a plus +
 The subtraction sign is a minus –
 + means to add making the number bigger
 - means to decrease the number making it smaller
Subtraction

 When subtracting numbers or objects such

as apples can you go below
 NO

 You cannot have a negative number of

apples
 Once the number reaches 0 STOP
