ESSENTIAL MEDICINES
AT UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL [UTH]

BACKGROUND

 This study was as a result of public procurement practices establishment made by the
government of the Republic of Zambia meant for helping the health authority in procuring of
essential medicines in Public Hospitals in line with achieving Universal Health Coverage by
2030. (ZMRA, 2017).

 The study was further fueled by a 2017 report by Kalunga (2017) which reported that, only "nine
percent (9%) of public emergency clinics and non-emergency centers in Lusaka Zambia had
sufficient medical supplies.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

 Admittance to fundamental medications is dependent upon well-working store network


frameworks that move drugs from the maker through to end-use.

 Regardless of the rising mindfulness about the significance of proficient strategies frameworks
for the accomplishment of wellbeing results,

 There is an absence of a well-working procurement technique for fundamental medications


leading to stock-out rates of essential medicines in public health care centers.

STUDY OBJECTIVES
 General Objective:
 To analyze the University Teaching Hospital procurement strategies towards the provision in
public health facilities in Zambia of Essential Medicines.
 Specific Objective:
1. To determine the strategies employed in the procurement of essential medicines at the
University Teaching Hospital
2. To determine the factors behind the limited availability of essential medicines in the public health
facilities.
3. To ascertain the challenges encountered in the procurement of essential medicines.
4. To determine how procurement practices can be enhanced in the procurement of essential
medicines at University Teaching Hospital.

STUDY METHODOLOGY

 Study was approached in a qualitative manner using descriptive study designs.

 Simple Random sampling was used to sample 169 participants from University
Teaching Hospital employees.

 Descriptive statistics was employed in data presentation of the percentages,


frequencies and the statistical data obtained from data analyzed using Microsoft
Excel and SPSS.

 Preparation, techniques and practices towards the acquisition of fundamental


medications at UTH was ineffectual.

 Challenges associated with inefficient stock control structures were dependably


perceived on assessments adding generally to standard stock-outs of meds.

 UTH had no estimations or proactive factors in the acquisition arranging of


satisfactory fundamental medications.

 the hospital is confronted with poor objective setting and failure to follow
prerequisites and progress in the procurement of medications.

DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS

 shortages and stock outs of essential medicines at UTH are mainly caused by delays in the
procurement of these medicines.

 UTH enhance procurement strategies of essential medicines through the establishment of


an information Centre for medicine shortages.

 Ministry of Health should enhance a monthly tracking of medical supplies to immediately


detect shortages

 Future research into the chance of controlling drug costs particularly in the private sector is
exceptionally essential
